On this episode, I interview  Joshua Foster, the Founder of JAF Creative Solutions—a community impact-focused strategic partnership and design consultancy firm. Many people don’t know that Josh is the first person I ever told about my idea to start this show. His response was simply, “do it”. As you know the rest is history.
“I’m a community builder,” says Joshua, referring to his varied professional background which began with a career in architectural design and real estate development, before he started his own business several years ago.
Listen in as Josh discusses what it takes to foster authentic and impactful community engagement as a real estate developer. He also gives his thoughts on gentrification, and his tips on ensuring post-occupancy community, engagement, and social impact.
Highlights
1) As a real estate developer, really taking the time to involve the community in a project will result in an amazing return on investment. Working on a single property can turn into two, three, or even more projects with a long-term commitment to that particular neighborhood.
2) Affordable housing is a good thing when it’s paired with programs and opportunity that promote upward mobility.
3) Public-private partnerships are key to making big changes in the community. Increasing equity among all parties can be a tough challenge, but there are always much better opportunities that emerge from local governments working together with private developers.
