Donovan was born and raised in the deep South. In the South, you have rednecks, religion, sports, and big trucks. Donovan isn’t and doesn’t relate to any of those things. His background is in technology and he likes to think of himself as the enemy of ignorance and stupidity. Recently, he decided to get sober… for good. This means much of Call Me Donovan (formerly DDP) will be him discussing that continuous journey with all the ups & downs that go along with it.

    Boredom

    Boredom

I discuss the topic of boredom and how the abuse of alcohol is a way to stave it off. It’s something I did almost religiously. I also contemplate that I may suffer from ADHD (undiagnosed) and that also had an effect on my abuse of alcohol.
A good bit of the episode deals with keeping myself busy with things that I’m finding aren’t really worth it either in time or money, and what I should do about them.

    A Roguish Episode

    A Roguish Episode

Hey, welcome to another episode of Call Me Donovan. I'm your host, Donovan, from Tifton Media Works, recording on June 10th, 2024. This episode is mainly housekeeping and an apology. I recently moved the podcast from Substack to Acast, inspired by other podcasters I follow and the free tier they offer. I had previously used Transistor.fm, which I liked, but it cost $19 a month without a free option.
Over the weekend, I realized I preferred Substack despite some quirks. I announced this on my Substack at callmedonovan.substack.com, so please subscribe there if you haven't yet.
During the transition, some episodes reappeared in the feed, which might confuse listeners. I apologize for this. If you see episodes you’ve already heard, just archive them. I have more podcast listeners than Substack subscribers, so I urge you to subscribe on Substack for additional content that might not be in audio format.
I manage an online radio station, Radio Tift, and started a show called "Friday Night '80s at 8." Each week, I play top hits from a specific year in the '80s. Tune in on RadioTift.com or the Live365 app, starting this Friday, June 14th, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, featuring songs from 1988.
I also reviewed the latest Doctor Who episode, "Rogue," giving it a 7 out of 10. While the episode was enjoyable, I had issues with the Doctor’s promise to keep Ruby safe but then leaving her alone. Overall, it was a solid episode with intriguing twists.
Thanks for listening, and sorry again for the podcast shuffle. I hope this will be the final move. You can reach me at don@callmedonovan.com or on social media. Subscribe to callmedonovan.substack.com for updates. Take care, and remember, you can call me anything, but hopefully, you’ll call me Donovan.

373 Days and Another Doctor Who Episode

373 Days and Another Doctor Who Episode

In this episode, I celebrate 373 days of being alcohol-free. With it getting closer to summer, the heat reminds me of enjoying cold beer on hot days and whiskey on cold nights, but I'm staying strong in this journey
    .
I've also been dealing with a frustrating computer issue at a client's site that may require a complete reinstall. On a lighter note, I review the latest "Doctor Who" episode, "Dot and Bubble," which I compared to "Black Mirror's" "Nosedive" for its focus on social media addiction. The episode reveals that the residents of a city called Finetime are racist, a plot point that deeply affects the Doctor.
I give the episode 8 out of 10.

Celebrating 366 Days of Sobriety, Doctor Who Surprises, and Sci-Fi Fun with "Atlas"

Celebrating 366 Days of Sobriety, Doctor Who Surprises, and Sci-Fi Fun with "Atlas"

Hey, welcome back to another episode of "Call Me Donovan." It's episode 32, and today is Memorial Day, May 27th, 2024. It's also been 366 days since I quit drinking. This milestone marks the longest period in my life without alcohol, surpassing my previous record from 2017-2018, when I celebrated a year of sobriety with some Apple Crown.
Speaking of Apple Crown, I still have fond memories of its taste, which ironically, I now recall when using Apple-scented Dawn Power Wash to clean dishes. Our dishwasher has been out of order since we bought our house in 2006, so we rely on this cleaning method and my daughter, who took over dish duty after my mom passed away (no, my mom wasn't washing our dishes - listen and you'll understand what that means).
Reflecting on the past year, it's been incredibly positive. My business had its best year in 2023, partly because I was more engaged and set clear boundaries with my clients. Not drinking helped me stay focused and receptive to new opportunities. This time, my approach to sobriety is different—it's a permanent lifestyle change, not just a temporary goal.
I also wanted to share my thoughts on Doctor Who. Episode 4, "73 Yards," was surprisingly good—an 8.5 out of 10. It's very Ruby-centric, with the Doctor barely appearing. The episode involves Ruby encountering a mysterious woman who stays exactly 73 yards away from her at all times. This episode was a well-crafted mystery, a stark contrast to the disappointing first two episodes of the season.

Lastly, my wife and I watched a movie called "Atlas" on Netflix. It stars Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu. The plot revolves around an AI soldier deciding to end humanity to stop wars. The special effects were top-notch, and despite some typical tropes, it was an enjoyable watch—I'd rate it 8 out of 10. If you enjoy sci-fi, it's worth checking out.
Feel free to reach out with your thoughts via email at don@callmedonovan.com or leave a voicemail/text at 229-796-4009. You can also find me on Twitter, Instagram, and Threads under the username donadkisson. Here's to more days of sobriety and new adventures. Until next time, take care of yourself, and you can call me Donovan.

    358 and More Doctor Who

    358 and More Doctor Who

Celebrating 358 days of alcohol retirement (recorded this on day 359) in this episode.
Did episode 3 prove my theory? I also discuss how episode 3 of season 14 of Doctor Who maybe, just maybe, restored my faith in the show. The proof will be after the next episode or two airs.

    The Disneyf*ckation of Doctor Who

    The Disneyf*ckation of Doctor Who

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit callmedonovan.substack.com

Hey, it's me, celebrating 353 days of being alcohol-free! Thanks for joining in on my journey. But today, I'm doing something different—I'm giving you my take on a TV show, Doctor Who. Now, there's a split in the series, leading to Gatwa's 15th Doctor. Personally, I'm not sold on the split, but hey, it's sci-fi, right? I've been a fan since the '80s, through all the ups and downs. Fast forward to the Disney-funded revival, and we've got bigger budgets and flashy effects, but also a "Disneyf*ckation" of the show. Gatwa and Gibson bring something new, but the writing in recent episodes—like "Space Babies"—is just disappointing. Even my wife, a fellow Whovian, agrees. Let's hope the upcoming episode by Steven Moffat brings back the magic. Until then, drop me a line with your thoughts. Next time, I'll be back with more on my alcohol journey. Thanks for tuning in and take care!
