A.K.A.: Nicknames & Name Changes in The Bible "Sons of Thunder"
When Jesus first calls the disciples, he nicknames James and John the Sons of Thunder. Scholars don't know what Jesus meant by these epithets, but the two brothers do have quite the tempers in the Gospels. Pastor Jacob explores why Jesus would call these two hotheads into ministry and why Jesus decided to call each of us.

ROOTED.: Surprise Seeds
In Mark 4, Jesus tells us a strange parable about someone who scatters seeds and then goes to bed, and somehow those seeds grow without any further work. If any of us have ever tried to keep a plant alive, we know growing something is never that easy! On this last Sunday of Stewardship Season, Pastor Jacob explains how the mystery of the Kingdom of God allows the seeds of kindness and love that we scatter to grow in ways and in places we never expected!

ROOTED.: Look Around
Our sermon series "Rooted," is designed to celebrate the ways in which a community of faith can help us deepen our spirituality and connect with others. But strangely, Pastor Jacob begins his sermon by sharing all the ways religion and religious communities can actually be a source of evil. To avoid these same pitfalls, Pastor Jacob encourages us to focus on the root of our faith which is not power or control or having all the right answers, instead the root of our faith is being rooted in the love of Christ.

Such a great change
Listening to these sermons during the week remind me what a progressive church body this is compared to other sermons I’ve listened to in the past. There’s such a relevant take to each sermon that doesn’t feel trite, and instead feels applicable to my everyday life.
Perfect Reminder
Relevant sermons bring such a refreshing take on how the gospel is incorporated into our everyday lives. The inclusivity message from the church along with tying in real world events makes this the perfect reminder of how we incorporate God’s word into everything we do.
Oh, I missed a Sunday!
I missed a Sunday at Claremont United Church of Christ because I really didn’t feel well and I wish I went anyway! I heard it was another fantastic service with everyone wearing red, confirmands that I knew sharing their faith statements, confetti cannons spreading the Holy Spirit upon all the children, AND another fabulous sermon! Thank goodness they use this podcast so I can catch up on at least one fabulous aspect of my missed day at church!
