Let’s shake things up! Hosts Rick X. Hoops (they/he) and Jared Miller (he/him) are both members of the Impact team at Minnesota Opera, who have been friends for nearly 10 years. They are also two young, queer artists and educators who prioritize creating affirming, accessible spaces that foster sustainability and holism in the arts. crescendo is a new podcast that aims to provide young artists and anyone curious about a career in the arts with current perspectives on navigating performance art industries–from classical music to musical theater, from the stage to behind the curtain. Jared and Rick bring their experiences as young professionals who have built careers in performing, education, administration, and creative direction. Please join us every of other Tuesday as we break down current topics with care, critical lenses, and a whole lot of laughter.

Giving and Taking Artistic Feedback (w/Charles H. Eaton)
On this episode of crescendo, Jared and Rick discuss moving through defensiveness, learning to be directable, showing respect in artistic spaces, and teaching in a variety of styles. They’ll chat about their experiences with ageism, the differences between earned respect and assumed respect, and finding their own ways to learn that fit their own personal circumstances. This episode’s guest, Charles H. Eaton, baritone and Resident Artist at Minnesota Opera, will share his thoughts on giving and receiving effective feedback as both a performer and teacher, as well as his experiences with vocal injury and the stigma that surrounds it.

Maintaining a Positive Self-Image (w/Keely Futterer)
On this episode of crescendo, Jared and Rick talk about a common challenge for young artists: maintaining a positive self-image. They'll open up about some of their own struggles with self-esteem as young artists and give tips to building confidence and managing negative self-talk. This episode's guest, soprano and Resident Artist, Keely Futterer (she/her) will join our hosts to share about her time with Minnesota Opera, her experience as Musetta in La bohème, and give some advice to young artists who may be struggling to quiet their inner critic onstage. Jared, Rick, and Keely (with a small assist from Producer Rocky) also answer questions submitted by MNOP's Youth Opera program participants.

Finding Success as an Artist (w/Jeremiah Sanders)
Welcome back to the second episode of Minnesota Opera’s new podcast, crescendo: building the future of the arts! This podcast aims to provide artists of any age with current perspectives in navigating performance art industries. On this episode, Rick and Jared talk about how to define success as an artist. They will explore images of success in their respective career paths and compare that to the reality of being successful. They also chat about setting reasonable and realistic expectations with an emphasis on differentiating between aspirations and achievable, incremental goals. Then, they'll sit down with current Minnesota Opera Resident Artist, baritone Jeremiah Sanders (he/they) about their experience in MNOp's upcoming production of La bohème, and what they have learned of the course their two-year residency. Jeremiah also gives an insight into his approach to goal-setting and bringing aspirations into reality.
