    In our third episode of Cuentame: Tell me their story, we continue our ancestry journey with our great grandmother, Abuela Carmen, the eldest daughter of Abuela Camila.

    Abuela Carmen was born in the 1910s in Morovis, Puerto Rico, located in the northern-central part of the island. During her late thirties, she and her children moved to Lower Manhattan, where she would spend the next fifty-plus years of her life.

    For two episodes, we will explore the life of Abuela Carmen through the eyes of her youngest daughter, Carmen.

    Through storytelling and research, we put together the pieces of our past and honor those who came before us.

    In our first episode, we begin our ancestry journey with our great-great-grandmother, Abuela Camila. She was born in the late 1800s in Morovis, Puerto Rico, located in the northern-central part of the island.

    For over a hundred years, our families worked on fincas and lived off the land. Abuela Camila was a stern, yet fair woman as a farmer, medicine woman, wife, and mother to sixteen children. Abuela Camila was a stern, yet a fair woman. Through loss and turmoil, her stoic demeanor showed the world that suffering should not define women; it must make them stronger.
