The Irishman (2019) | The American Mafia (1975)

The Irishman (2019) | The American Mafia (1975)

Welcome to Cut to Black: A Reel History Special. This is a crossover between two of our Shows What You Know podcasts! On Cut to Black we discuss The Sopranos; on Reel History we dig into the historical context of movies and television.

This episode bridges the gap between both podcasts as we’ll be using Scorsese’s The Irishman as a jumping-off point to discuss the formation of the mafia in the USA, so whether you’re hearing this on our Cut to Black feed or Reel History feed we believe there will be something in it for you!

So, I heard you paint houses? This week we tackle the Martin Scorsese mobster masterpiece, The Irishman! Join us in our special crossover episode with sister show Cut to Black as we discuss the origins of the American Mafia. How did the organisation of the Mafia Commission lead to deals with Union boss Jimmy Hoffa and what was the role of WWII veteran “the Irishman,” Frank Sheeran in Hoffa’s infamous disappearance? From the Five Points Gang to the Bay of Pigs invasion, we track the influence of the mob on shaping the 21st century.

Sopranos Sitdown S06E20 – “The Blue Comet” – Cut To Black

Sopranos Sitdown S06E20 – “The Blue Comet” – Cut To Black

It is really starting to sink in that we are coming to the end. Jim and Jakob’s journey through the Sopranos is almost at that final Cut To Black, but before that we have a superb episode that sees tensions really coming to a head between New Jersey and New York, possibly the end for Tony and Melfi and of course some AJ drama. Quick note that before we get to the series finale “Made In America” we will be revisiting the pilot episode “The Sopranos” next week so we can reflect on just how far we have come.

There’s only one thing left to say...

best podcast ever! cazzata malanga!

boss furio ,

great for Sopranos fans and first timers

Leaving a copy from my review of "Shows What You Know". I'm coming to the end of this podcast with only a couple of episodes left. I'll miss it when it's over.

With The Sopranos' recent 20th anniversary, I decided to come back to it and watch it entirely from start to finish. Despite starting the show during its original TV run, I hadn't quite finished it. So, for my (partial) re-watch, I wanted to listen to a podcast that was spoiler free and progressed through the series episode by episode. This podcast by Jim and Jakob was a great find. I've listened to almost every Sopranos episode of this podcast, having recently passed it. Even though I've completed my Sopranos rewatch, I'll surely listen to more episodes of this very entertaining podcast covering what was the greatest TV series I've ever experienced.

The format of the podcast is a scene-by-scene analysis by Jim and Jakob. They cover the series almost from a perspective of TV writers, discussing how effective it is and the emotions it successfully elicits from the audience. These guys are pretty knowledgable about TV, find references to other TV shows, and can point out how particular aspects of The Sopranos have influenced shows which came after. They also have an acute sense of humor; they find things hilarious that many people probably wouldn't notice, and they laugh a lot during this podcast. It provides a lot of entertainment and makes you enjoy The Sopranos even more. If you're not interested in overanalyzing an awesome TV show (some podcasts on The Sopranos do find meaning where there is none), but looking for more insight on the show during your rewatch (or spoiler-free first watch), you can find it here.

I'd recommend finding the video streams of these broadcasts on YouTube! You can see their reactions on video which makes it even more humorous. They've recently stopped streaming themselves, though, and only show a banner image of a scene from The Sopranos. Hopefully they'll do video streams for the final episodes of the show.

Ursistas crotch ,

This show is like Chinese food....

You’ll want more 5 min later. The co-host is huge blow hard douche and that ruined the show.
