As Gary is remembered by those he left behind, what does his story tell us about the world we live in – online and off – right now?
Gary Matthews was a talented artist and photographer, sociable and well-liked - a familiar face in his hometown of Shrewsbury. A few years ago, his friends noticed that he was getting into conspiracy theories. Like millions of others, he fell for Covid pseudoscience when the pandemic hit. In January 2021, at the age of 46, Gary caught the virus, and died.
Marianna Spring, the BBC’s specialist disinformation reporter, travels to the serene medieval Shropshire town that Gary Matthews called home to investigate what happened to him - and why. While delving into the conspiracy underbelly of this picturesque town, she finds out more about Gary's life - and discovers a story that's been repeated across the country, and around the world.

Wonderful

I am a physician and have been waiting for someone to tell this story in a way I could hear. Thank you for the wonderful, thorough, human, kind but clear approach. It is healing for me to hear.

Not sure what the story is here

This isn’t a bad podcast, but I’m not sure what story it is trying to tell. It’s not really the story of this man’s end of life, since it only briefly covers his last actions, and mostly repeats the little information it knows. It sort of touches on his descent into Covid denial, but doesn’t really delve into that much either, mostly because his Facebook account got deleted. It sort of briefly talks to people who were involved in his Covid denial movement but doesn’t really delve into their reasoning or logic, nor does the host do much in the way of refuting them - she simply narrates over top, “this is not true”. It would probably be more effective to narrate WHY the things they say are untrue. For example, when Mr. Parker says how inaccurate he believes the PCR test is, and gives garbage data, it would be so easy for the host to say, here are the real accuracy numbers for that test. But perhaps this podcast isn’t meant to refute known lies. This just sort of adds to my confusion…what story is this podcast trying to tell? It’s sort of missing a narrative arc, or a larger purpose, or some great information. Again, it’s produced well, but there are more informative podcasts out there. I will look forward to seeing how this host grows as a podcaster though.
