The Disaster Tough Podcast is for emergency managers, by emergency managers. We share stories, lessons learned, and tips to help you make informed decisions. Our host, John Scardena is a former Federal Emergency Response Official with Type 1 response experience. He now leads Doberman Emergency Management, from which this is being recorded. Our guests are also field experts who provide their insights in our conversation based podcast.
Discussions with emergency managers revolve around the entire disaster life-cycle. We provide solutions based on training and backed by data. We share experiences of emergency response and identify the lessons learned through our own version of after action reporting. This is conversation mode activated. We are known for flipping from serious to humor without warning. Try to keep up in our weekly podcasts!

In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, we learn more about how frequent guest, Chief Walt Lewis of the Orlando Fire Department lives by this mantra both professionally and personally.
Chief Lewis has been with the Orlando Fire Department for nearly 30 years and currently serves as a Board Member and Conference Chair for the State Urban Search and Rescue Alliance. As such, he is heavily involved in the planning, organization, and execution of the Annual National US&R and Medical Special Operations Conference in Orlando.
In this episode, Chief Lewis provides a brief look-ahead to the 2024 edition of the conference happening in November of this year.
He and host, John Scardena also reflect on the people who have made a difference in their professional and personal lives and how gratitude, humility, and paying it forward are the best ways to find success and fulfillment in your career.

Emergency Manager, and master multitasker, Michelle Cechowski is living this reality every day as she balances her many leadership roles both professionally and personally. As the Director of Emergency Preparedness for the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council, Michelle also works as the Executive Director and Symposium Lead for the Florida HazMat Symposium and is an Instructor of upper-level classes at the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), among other responsibilities.
Michelle's professional journey started in law enforcement and response. After nearly a decade in that profession, she was led to Emergency Management and continues to look to grow and evolve in the field.
In this, her second appearance on the Disaster Tough Podcast, Michelle talks about that journey and how she manages to remain efficient in her Emergency Management leadership despite being involved with so many different entities.

Love this podcast!
I am fairly new to the field of emergency management with only my education and 2 years of experience. I have found this podcast as a huge resource. John is a great host and everyone he brings on has such great information to provide! I always look forward to the next episode.
Leadership Skills
I first started listening because I want to be prepared for emergencies and thought I could get advice from the experts.
Not only did I get some great ideas, I found myself taking notes! The discussions John has with those who have strong skills and “street level” experiences are invaluable.
No matter your career field, you an apply what they suggest. I highly recommend this series.
