Welcome to the Notable Peeps Podcast, where we chat with notable people about their proudest and most significant accomplishments in life, how they took on life challenges, and what they’ve done to find their path in life. Remember to choose your best and do the impossible!

Doug and His Theatre Addiction

While stationed in the Air Force from 1956 to 1959, he was stationed in the UK and would visit London on weekends. One of those weekends, he bought tickets to My Fair Lady with Julie Andrews. The year was 1958, and Doug wanted to meet Ms. Andrews. Through his network of friends, he found someone who was a neighbor of Julie's and was able to get Doug backstage. Doug's friend introduced him to Julie Andrews, and she signed his program.

Today, he attends live theatre 23 times a month, and his favorite theatre is in Sandy. He is a season ticket holder at several theatres and is often there watching the latest productions. "I really recommend people go to the theatres - not the movie theatre - because there's nothing like live theatre."

How He Met His Wife on a Double Decker Bus Going to His Girlfriend’s House

“I was on the way to my girlfriend’s house, but she was prettier!” They started talking, and Doug soon found out she was from Finland. He followed her off the bus and ended up spending Boxing Day holiday weekend with her. They met on December 26th, and he proposed to her the following Valentine’s Day. They were married on June 13th, and they had four kids together.

Local Utah Theatre

The Hale Theatre in the valley is the theatre that Doug frequents the most. “I’ve taken over 19,000 pictures with actors. In 2006, David Weeks, a well-known theatre actor, gave Doug the title of ‘Super Fan.’ Doug attends theatre at all the local theatres in Utah, including Ogden, Sandy, and Salt Lake City.

At the local community theatres, the actors aren’t paid for their work. “If you’re an equity player, then you are paid.” Each theatre is allowed two equity players, and many donate their payback to the theatre. The leads also are equity players, and touring companies are all equity players.

Listen in as we talk about Broadway live streaming, what keeps Doug going, and why he is addicted to live theatre.
