About the Episode

In this episode, Leslie explores what “good” education is, and what gets in the way. Longtime alternative/holistic/unconventional educators Marla Renn and Monica Cochran school her (see what we did there?) on principles of meaningful (and joyful!) learning, how typical educational values and institutions interfere with them, and how adults can nurture a love of lifelong learning in kids. There may just be a tidbit in there for the grown-ups too!

Guest Bio & Links

Marla is an educator that has worked in a variety of learning environments including conventional, democratic freerange, learner designed and led projects, and joyful anarchist models. She is most interested in collaborating in meaningful ways with others through the disruptive forces of fully self-expressed people and communities, in order to create a world we all want to live in. She is a settler and grateful to the Coast Salish Peoples who have, for thousands of years, tended to and walked gently upon the beautiful unceded traditional territories she now calls home. Her happiest places include being in the ocean, hanging out with trees, and cooking.

Monica Cochran is passionate about nurturing the love of learning and has vast experience in helping learners of all ages enjoy learning. Working locally in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area and virtually (online), all over the world, she especially enjoys helping learners who have unique talents and challenges develop their strengths and learn in ways that work for them, so they can become lifelong learners and thrive in our 21st century world.
