Ep 159 Creating New Habits Stop Over-drinking and Start Living

    • Mental Health

I'm reading Atomic Habits by James Clear, so good, highly recommend you get it!

Going alcohol free (for a day or forever) is a RESULT we want, right? We don’t want to consume alcohol, PERIOD, that’s the end game, I’m not talking about forever, just think for a specified amount of time. This is the habit we'd like to change.

However, just focusing on the end game, and declaring ‘I will not drink.’ doesn’t change why you want to drink, your identity as an over-drinker, how to overcome deprivation, or any internal triggers you might have. All of that stuff is still there.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about: My mind used to think: ‘Oh, it’d be fun to have a margarita right now!’

And if I was ‘on a break’ or ‘not drinking’ that day, my mind would then think, ‘well I’m a grown ass woman who works, takes care of her family, pays my bills, if I wanna drink, I can!’

And then I probably did. OR, I would battle with myself about it, white knuckle through it, distract myself from the desire and mind chatter like scrolling, watching tv, eating or something else not super helpful.

So, in the end I might not have drank but I didn’t become someone who ‘doesn’t need to drink’ or who doesn’t think about alcohol all the time.

But what I'm explaining to you in this week's episode will help you embody the habits of someone who doesn't over-drink.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO SKIP THIS EPISODE.

I don’t identify as a drinker. I don’t think it would be fun, I don’t think it would be a solution to any problem or make any situation better.

So, if you want to change who you are and actually become a non over-drinker (whatever that means for you) then the actual work needs to happen is how you see yourself, how you identify yourself.

Tune in and learn how.
