Episode 22: EJ Obiena on qualifying for the Olympics, on breaking pole vaulting records, and how the best olympians in the world train Methods to Greatness

    • Society & Culture

EJ Obiena has grown to become one of the biggest names today in the global sports scene.

This professional pole vaulter held the Philippine national record in pole vaulting with a record of 5.55 meters, which he accomplished in 2016 at the 78th Singapore Open Championships in Kallang, Singapore. He later broke the Asian Athletics Championships record with 5.71 meters in 2019 on its 23rd biennial meet at Doha, Qatar, which earned him the coveted gold medal finish.

In that same year, he continued to stun the world after he cleared 5.81 meters in an outdoor pole-vaulting tournament in Italy--which paved the way for him to become the first Filipino athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Weeks before the Tokyo Games, he cleared 5.87m in the Irena Szwewinska Memorial/Bydgoszcz Cup in Poland and smashed his own national record, eclipsing the 5.85m record he had earlier set in Mossingen, Germany.

The son of a former national pole vaulter and hurdling student-athlete, our guest also holds the distinction as first Filipino vaulter to compete in the Olympics since Edward Lasquete, who represented the Philippines in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

At 26 years young, this outstanding athlete is definitely on his way to becoming one of the country’s sports legends.

✅ How he was introduced to pole vaulting by his father at the age of 6

✅ Excelling at something not a lot of people know how to do
