#5004 Miley Cyrus - Prophet or Narrator?

#5004 Miley Cyrus - Prophet or Narrator?

In this enlightening episode of Faith Over Breakfast, Pastor Eric and Pastor Andy sit down to discuss the enigmatic figure that is Miley Cyrus. Often dubbed the voice of her generation, Cyrus has been both adored and criticized for her bold expressions and transformative musical journey.
Drawing parallels, our hosts draw attention to other iconic figures like Madonna and Britney Spears. They recognize the shared thread of pushing boundaries and the evocative narratives that each artist has presented over the years. While Madonna was the emblem of rebellion in the 80s and Britney epitomized the struggles of young pop stars in the 2000s, Miley offers a fresh perspective.
Yet, the debate centers around whether Miley is truly a prophet for her generation, foreshadowing and guiding the path of collective thought, or merely a narrator, reflecting the sentiments and experiences of her peers. Pastor Eric suggests that prophets often challenge the status quo, paving the way for new ideologies and urging their followers to think differently. Does Miley fit this mold?
On the other hand, Pastor Andy raises the point that as a narrator, Cyrus might simply be echoing the struggles, joys, and confusions of her contemporaries. It's a role that is equally important, as it validates the shared experiences of many.
Beyond the comparisons, our hosts also shed light on the distinctions. While Madonna, Britney, and Miley have all faced their share of controversies and challenges, their paths have been undeniably unique, and the way they have chosen to express themselves artistically differs greatly.
Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation, as Pastors Eric and Andy explore the complex world of pop culture and its intersection with faith. Whether you're a Miley Cyrus fan or just intrigued by the discourse, this episode promises a balanced and insightful discussion.

#5002 Filling in the Gaps: Rick Drost Talks Ministry, Memories, and Misgivings with Pastor Eric

#5002 Filling in the Gaps: Rick Drost Talks Ministry, Memories, and Misgivings with Pastor Eric

In this week's compelling episode of Faith Over Breakfast, we get a surprising twist: Rick Drost takes the reins, filling in for the usually unmissable Andy Littleton. A walk down memory lane is in order as Rick is none other than Pastor Eric's former youth pastor. For those of you who have been following Faith Over Breakfast, you know that the dynamic of the hosts often dictates the flavor of the conversation. Well, this episode promises a fresh blend of nostalgia, candid discussion, and a deep dive into the makings of ministry.
Rick takes the role of interviewer with aplomb, turning the spotlight on Eric, the podcast's co-host who we've come to know for his insightful perspectives on faith and daily life. With keen interest, Rick starts with the essentials, asking Eric about his early days in ministry. What motivated him to take this spiritual path? How has the journey been? You'll find Eric's responses nothing short of enlightening, giving us not just facts but the emotional texture of his vocation.
But, the episode isn't merely a biographical sketch of Pastor Eric. Rick ventures to ask the difficult questions, including one that might raise a few eyebrows: Why does Eric think youth ministry is a waste of time? It's a provocative query, especially coming from the man who was Eric's youth pastor. For those entrenched in church communities, youth ministry is often considered a cornerstone. But here, the episode invites us to challenge this conventional wisdom. The ensuing conversation is robust, nuanced, and laden with both skepticism and hope.
Rick's questions provide the scaffolding for an introspective dialogue. It's a rare treat to see Pastor Eric on the other side of the Q&A, to peel back the layers of his thoughts, revealing intricate views developed over years of ministry. And Rick, with his unique understanding of Eric’s spiritual upbringing, manages to extract deep insights that we might not have heard otherwise.
As the discussion unfolds, you'll find yourself drawn into a contemplative space. The episode becomes more than a conversation; it's an invitation to examine our own beliefs about the role and effectiveness of youth programs in churches. Are we stuck in a cycle of tradition, or is there room for new thought? Rick and Eric delve into this with a combination of personal stories and theological pondering, offering listeners a panoramic view of the debate.

My Favorite

I love this podcast because it is two friends talking about everything from jobs and family to church and Jesus and everything in between all in a transparent and vulnerable way. This is what our generation needs is real people doing life together and showing unconditional love while not hiding our doubts and questions but coming together to tackle it all with the strength and wisdom that only God offers. It’s my favorite podcast! Thanks guys!

What friends talk about

I like the idea behind this podcast. Two friends sitting down over coffee and talking about their passions and ministry. Too often pastors take a “Lone Ranger “ approach to their work which is a shame because we all know that iron sharpens iron. We need each other! And through this podcast, Eric and Andy allow us to be encouraged and challenged as we listen and thoughtfully engage.

Honest, funny, encouraging

They fulfill their tag line of offering what it would be like to sit down with two pastors over breakfast. I treasure their honest reflections and thoughts on life, scripture, people, psychology, sociology, current events, and hot topic issues. After listening to this podcast for over a year I feel like they are my dear friends and occasionally I hear their reflective voice in my head, and it leads me to the voice of God. They offer the world a beautiful gift in this podcast. Eric is a great question asker and Andy has gifting in pushing in deeper and asking what Christian phases and lingo actually mean. I leave each podcast with a new thing to ponder or engage.
