Practical Ideas to Come Alongside the Sufferer | Ep. 15

Practical Ideas to Come Alongside the Sufferer | Ep. 15

In this last episode of our Take Heart Series, Emily and Alyssa get very practical about what it might look like to come alongside someone who is suffering.

    Topics discussed in this episode:

The barriers we often run into that keep us from coming alongside other people.
Alyssa talks about her mom's "gift closet".
Getting rid of the idea that serving others needs to be elaborate or fancy.
    Panera bagels and cream cheese
Freezer meals on the front porch
Food gift cards when someone doesn't feel like cooking
Learning to say, "I'd like to make you a meal this week so which day works better, Monday or Tuesday?" instead of "let me know if you need anything."
Remembering the care-takers. Considering offering your time to sit with someone.
Learning to stop and say, "Can I pray for you right now?" instead of "I'll be praying for you."
Learning to live alert. Write down important dates (loss of a child, death in the family, etc.)
Alyssa shares her favorite blank cards to send people.
"In a crisis situation, always go. "
Walking alongside others in long-term suffering

Our favorite things to gift others in suffering:

    The Lord of Psalm 23
    Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy
    Held by Abbey Wedgeworth
Any Time, Any Place, Any Prayer

The Unseen Suffering of Mental Health | Ep. 14

The Unseen Suffering of Mental Health | Ep. 14

In this episode, Alyssa sits down with Emily for a really honest conversation on the unseen struggles of mental health, particularly when it comes to depression and OCD.

    Questions we talk about:

Why don’t you start by telling people a little bit of your story and walking us through your journey. When did you first start to realize you struggled with things like anxiety and depression (maybe even if you didn’t have a name for it at the time)?

Did you feel safe telling adults or mentors about things you were struggling with during this process or did you feel like it was a struggle no one would understand?

Talk us through how faith plays out in the middle of this. What kinds of questions did you have for God? What things or promises about His character were particularly hard for you to believe and cling to?

Do you think this kind of suffering is talked about enough in the church today? How do you see the church handling these issues?

Let’s talk about showing compassion and meeting practical needs in the lives of suffering people. Can you think of any specific things people did that have been encouraging, lifegiving, helpful to you over the years? How have you seen the church come around you?

What encouragement would you give to someone who is also struggling with anxiety/ depression?

Presence Over Pain with Doug Rumbold | Ep. 13

Alyssa joins pastor and author Doug Rumbold to talk about his new book, “Presence Over Pain”.

    Questions covered in this episode:

Tell us about yourself, your family, and the work you do. How did the book come about?
Why "presence"? Can you give us a story to flesh that out?
From your recent post- "Why is that when suffering is greatest and others need people near them are those same people mishandled, or worse, not loved?"
What are some common pitfalls to avoid?
What are some practical tips to embrace?
In your book, you described a moment with the Lord where He gave you the "three C's". Tell us what those are and how they help us walk through suffering.

Take Heart: Perspective vs. Comparison | Ep. 11

Take Heart: Perspective vs. Comparison | Ep. 11

Are you walking through a difficult season? Has suffering caught you by surprise? Are you struggling with comparing your circumstance to those of others around you? Listen as Emily and Alyssa talk about how being faithful with little includes being faithful in and through our suffering. They discuss how to gain perspective in our trials instead of falling into comparison.

“It's really hard for us to suffer well because we feel like we have to know what God is doing right now. So often in suffering, even if you look at the lives of people in Scripture, they had no idea what God was doing. It took years and years for them to be able to get the full picture. They didn’t get the full picture of what God was doing in 5 minutes, in 10 minutes or in 2 weeks. So often God’s timetable is so much slower than ours.”

Practical, Biblical Wisdom!

Emily and Alyssa ooze Biblical wisdom! It’s refreshing to hear from people that aren’t trying to be popular or the next best-seller, but are simply just faithful. I always look foward to hearing more from them.
