020: Wooden Phones for Wooden Towns

We have come back to our semi-regular podcasting schedule. We have missed each other and definitely missed y'all! After a few minutes of chit chat and forgetting to give our podcast name...oops? Also, this time it's not just Bre who is not sure she is saying things correctly. We get down to business. Brett goes back to 1871 for an enormous fire that jumped over a river! The Peshtigo fire was buried in history because it was the same day of the Chicago Fire. How some people survived was genius!

Then Breana comes into the scene with another flood scene. Another story that got a bit buried in the news because of COVID-19. End of May evacuations went down, and there were some dam fractures & bursts.

Did you know you could buy us a "coffee"..or beer, or whatever to help up create this podcast? https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pdspodcast

019: Just Wear a Mask Already

019: Just Wear a Mask Already

It's been said again and again - history repeats itself. In 1918 there was a pandemic that took over the globe. This episode Brett and Breana share the subject of the 1918 Pandemic. We go over how it affected the world, how it spread so much, what we learned from it, how some scientists with garden tools are badass, and sometimes fire extinguishers aren't enough to preserve specimens. Come listen to our sweet sweet voices and cackles take you back into time.

We actually recorded this early April - thought it is still relevant almost 3 months later. There are many locations in the United States that are getting surges of positive tests and hospitalizations. We ask everyone to listen to the experts and follow the suggested guidelines:
    - Wash your hands

    - Social Distance when possible

    - Wear a mask

If you have questions about mask safety and efficiency, this article from Stanford University is informative and helpful: http://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2020/06/stanford-scientists-contribute-to-who-mask-guidelines.html

    018: I Don't Practice Sultana, Ain't Go no 1874 Locust Cloud.

Gasp! Wow! Whoa! Erg! UHH! We will not leave you today without some great reactions and sound effects. Breana starts first this time to tell you about the Sultana sinking in 1865. The circumstances that lead to many deaths will make you angry as well. But who gets the blame...well, we will tell you.

Then..yes...locust. As Brett tells us about the Locus that literally took over farms in 1874, you can hear Breana try to hold her gags in. Y'all, locust stew! How did this affect farms and agriculture? What did the locust avoid? We shall tell you that too! Oh yeah, if we get 1,000 5 stars reviews, Brett will eat locus stew!

We didn't get to talk about this since we recorded almost 3 weeks ago - and a lot has changed since then, so:

017: Listen to the People: Haiti 2010 Earthquake and Lake Peigneur

017: Listen to the People: Haiti 2010 Earthquake and Lake Peigneur

Every time we discuss our disasters, we seem to find some kind of link. This time it seems to be something about governmental involvement post disasters.

With special guest Mark Snyder, Brett tells us all the intense details of the Haiti 2010 Earthquake. Mark was in Haiti after and gives us some information we didn't hear over the news. This includes the current state of Haiti now.

Breana tells us about what a bit of miscalculation can do! Lake Peigneur turned into a full-fledge whirlpool - but how? What happened next? Take a listen to find out!

Mark includes some very important organizations to contact if you would like to assist those in Haiti now - like http://www.ijdh.org/
