    FLEXcast #6 - Negotiations

In this installment of FLEXcast, we are talking about negotiations. It’s an intimidating topic for most. Do I deserve to ask for what I want and need? Can I advocate for myself and my career? Are there things I can do to increase my chances of success? The answer to all of these questions is YES! Listen to our conversation with Charlene Grabowski, retired VP and GM of GE Healthcare for the Western US and Canada and an executive coach involved in leadership development for academic faculty around the country.

    FLEXcast #5 - Mentorship

    FLEXcast #5 - Mentorship

“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.”

    — Steven Spielberg

In this episode, we are talking about mentorship. As faculty in academic medicine, we know that mentors are critical to our success. We also know that our needs are best met when we have a network of mentors. Acknowledging that many of our best mentoring relationships happen naturally, we also need some structure to provide a foundation and a clear understanding of our roles and expectations. We hope you enjoy this discussion and find some helpful information to enhance your role as both a mentor and mentee.

Special thanks to our guests Dr. Kathy Smith, MD, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Director of GME Faculty Development, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Dr. Rajesh Khanna, Professor in the Department of Pharmacology.

Thanks to Dr. Mel Anderson from the University of Colorado School of Medicine who presented these articles at his seminar for our faculty entitled “Weaving a Web: Effecting Mentoring Relationships” on September 17th, 2020.

FLEXcast #4 - Racism and Privilege in Medicine

FLEXcast #4 - Racism and Privilege in Medicine

We are so grateful to have Dr. Valentine Nfonsam join us for this important conversation. Dr. Nfonsam is Professor in the Department of Surgery, Interim Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology, and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the College of Medicine – Tucson.

In this episode, we are talking about racism, privilege, and some of the reasons we don’t speak up when faced with bias and discrimination. We want to share our conversation, our experiences, and some things we’ve learned. We’re all learning…and we all need to start having conversations like this.

We hope you find this discussion helpful, enlightening, maybe even uncomfortable. Welcome some discomfort – maybe then we can learn, grow, and bring about change together.
