"Right now, trans people face the unprecedented combination of political, social and physical violence--to the extent that when stories are told about our community, it is often through the lens of this violence,” says Imara Jones, host and creator of TransLash Podcast, Apple Podcasts’ Spotlight show for August 2022. “But the truth is that our lives are defined by so much more beyond hate. In almost every area of society, trans people are innovating, creating new futures and thriving--and this is the story I want to tell.”Jones first made an impact in a 2018 online docuseries about her transition and life and four years later, the podcast is just one part of TransLash Media, a fast-growing platform and nonprofit organization telling stories and reflecting the culture through a trans perspective. With new episodes twice a month, Jones delivers illuminating discussions with guests from the trans community as well as allies to help create a fairer world for all.
Each episode also starts with a segment that highlights a moment of joy to add a bit of levity to some of the heavier topics she covers. “We showcase the fundamental hope and joy which propels our community forward,” she says. “If you care about and want to understand trans people at this moment, we have evolved into essential listening both for our community and those outside of it.”
With anti-trans violence and political backlash at all-time highs, award-winning journalist Imara Jones hosts the TransLash podcast, where trans people and allies talk back about what matters most and discuss how to create a fairer world for all.

    Trump's Day One Promise

    Trump's Day One Promise

Trump isn’t mincing words when it comes to trans student athletes. This week on The Mess, Imara takes a look at his promise to repeal protections for trans kids in sports on day one in office. Next stop: Trump’s recent campaign rally in The Bronx. What can it tell us about the Latino vote and turning tides in traditional Democratic strongholds across the country? And a flurry of new legislation passed by the New Hampshire legislature spells trouble for the rights of trans kids in the Granite State.

    The New York Victory

    The New York Victory

This time on The Mess, there’s some news to celebrate! A ban keeping trans women and girls from participating in sports has been overturned. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who actively fought the ban, announced the big news over the weekend at the GLAAD awards.

While it’s important to celebrate the victories, we can’t turn away from the political hellscape. Imara breaks down why anyone who doesn’t want Trump to win the upcoming election should be concerned given a recent poll and what it says about young voters in swing states. And unfortunately, new experimental anti-trans legislation is continuing to get passed into law—Imara talks about a recent example and why, even though there aren’t as many anti-trans bills this year, we should be concerned about the new ones popping up.

As political attacks on trans athletes escalate, trans powerlifters are continuing to push their sport forward. First, she’s joined by two-time national champion, JayCee Cooper, who outlines her years-long legal battle with USA Powerlifting over her experience of discrimination by the organization. Next she talks with the World’s Strongest Trans Man, Scott Percy, about what that title means to him and how he hopes to inspire other transmasculine people to compete.
