Joe Harris' Season-Ending 2nd Ankle Surgery
Joe Harris underwent ankle surgery in November 2021 with a 4-8 week recovery timeline. Unfortunately, his recovery did not play out as expected, and it was recently announced that he will undergo a 2nd surgery and miss the rest of the '21-22 season. We discuss the multitude of factors that can lead to a 2nd surgery, how medical decision making for an NBA athlete differs from that of the lay person, and how in spite of advanced technology, modern medicine, and a track record of success, doctors may not always get it right.

Odell Beckham Jr. and the ACL Re-Tear
The Sports OrthoPods discuss Odell Beckham Jr's bittersweet end to the 2021-22 season - he left with a championship and another torn ACL. Beckham tore the ACL in his left knee in 2020 and made a successful return to the field, as evidenced by his domination during the first half of Super Bowl LVI. A non-contact pivoting injury to the same knee unfortunately resulted in another ACL tear. We talk about ACL re-tears, and how they are much more common than one would think. We discuss risk factors that may predispose someone who has previously had ACL surgery to tear again, and what the 2nd surgery, what we call revision surgery, is like.

S3 E19 - Zion Williamson's Ongoing Foot Saga
The Sports OrthoPods discuss Zion Williamson's complications following foot surgery in the off season. We previously discussed his injury when it was first disclosed at NBA Media Day that he sustained a Jones Fracture in the off season and underwent surgical repair. While this is surgery with a high success rate, there have been NBA players in the past who have not had a smooth recovery. Unfortunately, that is the case with Zion. We discuss the news of a biologic injection given to Zion to try and stimulate bone healing, the chances of success at this point, and the possibility of further surgery needed in the future.

S3 E18 - Jack Eichel's Cervical Spine Surgery & Controversy
The Sports OrthoPods discuss Jack Eichel's cervical spine surgery and the controversy surrounding his desire to have a cervical disc replacement instead of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) that was recommended by his team's medical staff when he was still a member of the Buffalo Sabres. According to the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, it is the team's medical staff, and not the player, who has final say on treatment decisions. Eichel was eventually traded to the Las Vegas Golden Knights where he was permitted to undergo the disc replacement surgery. We break down the scientific and ethical dilemmas that exist in this fascinating story.

S3 E17 - Pickleball - The Fastest Growing Sport in America

Calvin offers his unique perspective as someone who plays and coaches both tennis and pickleball, the differences and similarities not only in the sports themselves but in the injuries we see in Sports Medicine.

S3 E16 - Collin Sexton’s Meniscus Tear
The Sports OrthoPods talk Collin Sexton’s meniscus tear. Meniscus tears in high level athletes commonly require surgery, however there is no indication at this time that surgery is planned for Sexton. What gives? Can a meniscus tear be treated without surgery?

Hi, love the pod. Can you do one on Drew Doughty of the LA Kings? What kind of wrist injury takes you out for 5-6 months?
Good for sports fans and nerds!
This is a great show for anyone who wants to understand sports injuries, and enjoys sports. I am enjoying this podcast even though I am not a big fan of professional sports. However, I do know the men and women that play professional sports push their bodies to the limit and often have catastrophic injuries. For the average sports fan, that’s all you ever really know. This podcast takes a deep dive into the behind the scenes action of some players that have sustained major injuries and how they were treated for those injuries.
This show gives a lot of information that can help the not so medical savvy understand the injury, the mechanism of injury, treatment and rehabilitation. For total nerds like myself who find the science of medicine fascinating, this show is very entertaining. For example, you hear a player broke their leg, or tore their ACL and that’s it, now they’re out for the season. This show breaks down these injuries and then peppers in some really entertaining sports information.
The host Anthony Yu is easy to listen to and presents information in an easy to understand format. He develops a topic and conducts a great interview.
I will be subscribing and listening for sure. I’m glad I found this show, it’s definitely unique!
Great for every sports fan
As a sports fan I’m always curious what they mean by some of the injuries these players have. This podcast does a great job of explaining these injuries and their treatment to people with no medical background
