Ep. 15 - "Way To Take The Blade" (Series Finale)

Ep. 15 - "Way To Take The Blade" (Series Finale)

This episode will be our final of the podcast. In it, Daren and Jaymee once again transparently attempt to work out the ongoing differences and challenges posed by a resurrected show in Season 2. In this rawly emotional, no holds barred conversation that enters new territory in their friendship, the Cynic and the Mystic searchingly explore whether or not to continue the podcast. Though the episode ends on a misleading hopeful note, and demonstrates an arsenal of emotional intelligence, vulner...

Ep. 14 - "The Ace Ventura Of Death"

In this episode, Jaymee shares what he feels the "liberal middle finger" is, and provides suggestions for how to successfully override the hard wiring of our minds while simultaneously being kind to ourselves. Daren discovers that his thoughts now have a comment section, and that Jaymee is currently Daren's only consistently maintained adult relationship. Jaymee shares an incredibly heartwarming story from the weekend of being invited to be present at the passing of their neighbors dog, and h...

    Ep. 13 - "Daren Dass"

    Ep. 13 - "Daren Dass"

Pivoting gracefully from booger wall memories to quotes from enlightened master Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, Episode 13 is a heaping scoop of magic and scrutiny. Jaymee bets Daren he could MacGyver himself out of being chained to a dungeon cell with nothing more than mindfulness and a rat, and Daren presupposes what Krishna Das smells like. Jaymee discusses the hidden conditions within the widely observed notion of unconditional love, and how to pray without religion. Daren shares his ...

Ep. 12 - "Hotboxing With A Turkey Stick"

Ep. 12 - "Hotboxing With A Turkey Stick"

On this episode, Daren shaves his mustache to symbolize the ending of his brief career as a porn star, and wonders "what if I don't relate to any of The (individual) Beatles as people?". Jaymee shares another mind-blowing full circle synchronicity story he experienced over the weekend involving Ram Dass and Love Serve Remember, and the spiritually themed Curb Your Enthusiasm moment he found himself in as a result. Daren and Jaymee have an important conversation on the dominant influence porn ...

    Ep. 11 - "A Million Digressions"

    Ep. 11 - "A Million Digressions"

What do crunchy teenage socks and The Rolling Stones have in common? Probably a whole lot, but they're also just two examples of A Million Digressions found in Episode 11! Hear about the swarm of bees that took up residence in Jaymee's attic, and how Daren was touched by a freeway angel after getting a flat on the way to the airport. Daren visits his hometown Buffalo, NY for his birthday, spending time with his brother for the first time since their father passed. Meanwhile, back in Cal...

    Ep. 10 - "Bum Rush Shangri-La"

    Ep. 10 - "Bum Rush Shangri-La"

When Jaymee's face begins shapeshifting early on in this episode, Daren immediately realizes that he may have gotten a little too stoned prior to taping. As usual, Jaymee leads a heartfelt discussion while Daren hurls grenades of hilarity that explode frequently throughout the episode, which felt like an instant classic from the start. Jaymee tells the story of how he spent the 7th anniversary of his spiritual teacher Vic's passing by leaving a crystal at legendary music producer Rick Rubin's...

Entertaining and enlightening.

This podcast is rich. I enjoy the authenticity and transparency and vulnerability of Daren and Jaymee’s personal life stories, and the conversations that go along with it. I find myself deep in thought, laughing, tearful, or simply captivated by the discussion. I have a notes tab on my phone titled “Mystical Cynical” because I’m constantly inspired and take notes of writing prompt ideas, quotes, or topics of conversation to come back to.
I can’t listen to this podcast as background noise while I’m busy because I end up pausing it or rewinding it because I don’t want to miss a thing. So, I’m intentional about listening to it when I can give it my full attention. And it’s truly a delight. Entertaining and enlightening.
