The Murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond

The Murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond

When Russell and Shirley Dermond failed to show up to a neighborhood Kentucky Derby party their neighbors were beginning to grow concerned. It wasn't like Russell and Shirley, who were very active in their upscale gated community to not only not show up, but to also not call or give an explanation as to why they weren't going to appear.

Neighbors were still concerned days later after several attempts to reach the Dermonds' went unanswered. Taking it upon themselves to conduct a welfare check, neighbors of the Dermonds' would discover a terribly gruesome sight.

In the Dermonds' garage, laying in a dried pool of blood was the decapitated body of 88-year-old Russell.

And things would only get worse when investigators realized that not only had Russell been murdered, but his 87-year-old wife Shirley was missing.

Who could have possibly wanted to harm Russell and Shirley?

In today's case we talk about the murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond.

    The Murder of Connie Dabate

    The Murder of Connie Dabate

When Elliington police arrived at the Dabate home two days before Christmas in 2015, they were greeted with a shocking scene.

Richard Dabate was laying on the living room floor, tied to a folding chair that lay on top of him. His wife Connie lay dead, shot twice, in the other room.

The story Richard would tell police was terrifying- it was the story of 6'2 masked intruder with a voice like Vin Diesel. A man who would threaten the Dabate family if Richard did not give him his money and the pin numbers to his bank and credit cards. A man, who would discover that Connie had returned home from her spin class at the local YMCA and who would shoot her twice- leaving her dead and Richard fighting the man off with a blow torch.

A story that seemed like something that was far too crazy to be true- and investigators quickly seemed to think the same thing.

Was Connie Dabate murdered by a Vin Diesel sounding masked intruder? Or was Richard Dabate telling a story that was completely nuts?

    The Trick or Treat Murder

    The Trick or Treat Murder

On Halloween night 1957, Peter Fabiano and his wife Betty are already asleep when they hear a knock on the door. Peter, of course, is annoyed that someone is trick or treating so late, but Peter gets up from his bed, grabs the bowl of candy reserved for trick or treaters and makes his way to the front door.

Unknown to Peter however, the masked person standing on the other end of the door is not looking for a treat- they are looking to murder.

The Mysterious Disappearance and Reappearance of Mary Louise Day

The Mysterious Disappearance and Reappearance of Mary Louise Day

It wasn't unusual for 13-year-old Mary Louise Day to run away, in fact, she had done it multiple times after her family had moved to Seaside California. What was unusual however, was that when Mary had run away sometime in July of 1981 her family never reported her missing nor seemed too concerned with where the teen had gone.

This was a fact that didn't sit too well with Mary's younger sister Sherrie, who as soon as she turned an adult would report her older sister missing.

But 22 years later, just as investigators are beginning to suspect that something sinister happened to Mary Day, a routine traffic stop would throw the entire investigation for a loop. A woman with the same name and same date of birth would soon claim she was the missing Mary- but was she really? Or was she, what detectives on the case thought she was....an imposter?

Love this!

This is one of my favorites! The intro always makes me want more.

What’s nuts is how good this show is!

I love everything about this show! Great stories and Melissa is a great host. Selfishly, I wish the episodes were longer but also appreciate the charm of keeping them short. I look forward to listening each week!

llorlo ,

Not actually nuts

A case went cold and they found the guy with DNA 46 years later. That’s about as run-of-the-mill as it gets. The writing is quite poor and the tenses she tells the story in are confusing and don’t sound very serious. She doesn’t set the scene. Host seems way more passionate about herself talking than the stories on her podcast.
