According to the US Census records there are at least 2900 Americans that share my full name (Michael Marshall). Unsurprisingly there are many more across the greater English-speaking world. So, I decided to set out and interview the other Michael Marshalls to see what they're all like. Why not right? And it's actually been a riot. Michael Marshalls are rad! Among us are authors, pro athletes, activists, journalists, artists, really cool dads, architects, carpenters, inventors, actors and so much more. Each week I speak to a different Michael Marshall about their own experiences as well as their shared experience of our name.

What a unique concept!

I love the concept of this podcast! With so many people in our huge world sharing names, I’ve often wondered what would happen if you gathered them all together to share stories and bond over the name. This podcast is produced well and keeps me tuned in at all times. Name Taken is must hear podcast entertainment!

Genuinely, like, fascinating?

Off the top I just want to say that I’m super jealous I didn’t think of this concept for a podcast—because it’s brilliant.

I love learning about strange people from different places who I would never otherwise know are out there. It has a bit of a Humans of New York vibe—people are wholly disparate but are linked by the same name. Almost like an exploration of who you might have been in an alternate reality.

Plus, Michael has a perfect podcast voice, and he interviews each new person with genuine enthusiasm and curiosity. He’s able to get down into the odd details of the other person’s life and really explore them.

For me, this is all premium cat nip. But even listeners not as curious about strangers can enjoy how eclectic the podcast is—one week it’s an interview with a rapper, the next with a guy who grew up all over the world and now plays in a Quidditch league.

And the really great thing is…when you don’t think you’ll be interested in a person based on their description, but when you listen, you start to recognize (and hopefully interrogate and learn from) all the assumptions you’d made about the person without even clocking it. It’s a good reminder of how staggeringly diverse and yet relatable we are. All 8 billion(ish?) of us.
