About Our Guest:
Victor Boutros is the CEO and co-founder of the Human Trafficking Institute and co-author with Gary Haugen of “The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence,” a book published by Oxford University Press in 2014. Drawing on real-world cases and extensive scholarship, The Locust Effect paints a vivid portrait of the way fractured criminal justice systems in developing countries have spawned a hidden epidemic of human trafficking and everyday violence that is undermining vital investments in poverty alleviation, public health, and human rights. The Locust Effect is a Washington Post bestseller that has been featured by the New York Times, The Economist, NPR, the Today Show, Forbes, TED, and the BBC, among others. For their work on The Locust Effect, Boutros and Haugen received the 2016 Grawemeyer Prize for Ideas Improving World Order, a prize awarded annually to the authors of one book based on originality, feasibility, and potential for global impact.

Boutros previously served as a federal prosecutor on human trafficking cases of national significance on behalf of the United States Department of Justice’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit. He has taught human trafficking at the FBI Academy in Quantico, trained law enforcement professionals in the United States and other countries on how to investigate and prosecute human trafficking, and taught trial advocacy to lawyers from Latin America, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Boutros is a graduate of Baylor University, Harvard University, Oxford University, and the University of Chicago Law School, where he was an editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. He has written on foreign affairs and human rights, including a feature article in Foreign Affairs and a piece co-authored with former US Trafficking in Persons Ambassador John Richmond in the AntiTrafficking Review, and developed and taught a course on human rights, human trafficking, and the rule of law in the developing world at the University of Chicago Law School. Boutros speaks to corporate leaders, universities, and think tanks on human trafficking and has provided briefings to senior government leaders on human trafficking, including legislators, congressional committees, and the President of the United States.

About the Episode:Harriet and Doug met in college and fell in love shortly after they graduated. Doug was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 48. They talk about finding out about the diagnosis and how they want to be a light to those around them. Doug shares what his fears have been but how the Lord has given provisions to their family. With the limitation of his health, they share how specifically their prayer and spiritual life has deepened and the beauty that is being found through this time of slowing down and sharing with others. What others might see as a limitation, they have found joy in Christ and in each other.

About the Episode:
Phil shares his journey through anxiety and how the Lord helped him unravel the source of that anxiety. As he shares, he talks about how he felt about himself from past experiences and comments and how it all came to a head with a panic attack. Through the work of a counselor and the help of the Lord, deep wounds were uncovered. Phil talks about his need to offer forgiveness to people he had never forgiven as a huge step in his recovery. His hope in the Lord through this journey allows him to share with others that hope that will go through anxiety and suffering. He has realized his limits as it relates to coming to the end of himself and turning to the Lord and others to help walk through the feelings.

Phil Vandermeer graduated from The University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication. He has been married to Lauren Vandermeer since 2011. Lauren and Phil have no children, so they thoroughly enjoy being Uncle Phil and Aunt Lauren to many nieces, nephews, and many other young people they claim as family. Phil currently serves as Manager of Events at PCPC, where he has been on staff since 1999.

Kevin Joseph shares his testimony about how he was led to Christ through a teammate and his journey through professional baseball. He talks about his identity and desire to perform well while playing baseball knowing ultimately that baseball can’t satisfy the soul. Through his platform of baseball, he had many opportunities to share the Gospel, including many mission trips and living overseas. The culture around us seeks for everyone to do more and more while not counting the costs. There can tend to be an innate sense of wanting to feel limitless, and along with that comes immense pressure to "keep up." How do we move from what the culture says is possible to how we are meant to live as believers trusting in the Lord? These women share their process as they think through which activities their families participate in. They share how fear is a motivation behind too many activities and their desire to have freedom from that fear.

Lindsey Sheppard and her husband, Clayton, have been married for almost 17 years. They have an eleven-year-old son, a nine-year-old daughter, and a six-year-old daughter.

Sara Hale loves being married to her husband, John, and being the mother of their two children. She is a member of PCPC who says "hello" to Aunt Carol, who watches the services from California each week.

Kristen Hatton is a Christian author, speaker, and Licensed Professional Counselor Associate supervised by Kari Stainback, LPC-S. She has written three books for teenagers, one specifically addressing adolescent girls' struggle for identity and worth, and her latest book for parents, Parenting Ahead (April 2023 release date). In addition, she started a ministry for parents called Redemptive Parenting that includes The Redemptive Parenting Podcast. But after nearly 25 years of mothering and lay counseling stirred her desire for further training to better walk alongside those dealing with such issues as stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and relational issues that she commonly encountered, Kristen returned to school for a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University.

As a professional counselor, Kristen works primarily with teen girls, young adult women, parents, and families. While she naturally operates from a biblical worldview integrating faith in counseling, Kristen gladly meets all clients where they are, for she believes the most important aspect of counseling is in the therapeutic relationship.

Furthermore, because Kristen does not see counseling as a one-fit-for-all, she draws from several counseling modalities, including family systems and cognitive behavioral therapy. Kristen and her husband have three adult children and a son-in-law. Outside of work, Kristen is active in her church and enjoys being outdoors, traveling, entertaining, writing, and watching football. Her writing can be found at kristenhatton.com as well as on the Rooted Ministry website and in LifeWay magazine's ParentingTeens magazine.
