(4.18) Louisa Barnes Pratt: First Sister Missionary in This Dispensation

Louisa Barnes Pratt played a pioneering role as the first woman to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning her journey in support of her husband Addison Pratt’s mission to French Polynesia in 1844 and joining him in 1850. Facing hardships such as scurvy and the challenges of raising four daughters alone, Louisa’s resilience was evident in her trek from Nauvoo to winter quarters and her subsequent mission work. Upon Addison’s return after six years, the family faced internal conflicts about returning to Polynesia but eventually embarked on a challenging voyage to Tupoy. There, despite language barriers, they engaged in teaching and supporting the local community, with their daughters quickly learning Tahitian. However, political tensions, exemplified by Elder James Brown’s expulsion due to anti-government activities, ultimately forced Addison Pratt and his companions to leave in 1852, entrusting the continuation of their mission work to the Polynesian saints. Louisa’s story, a testament to her faith and dedication, is based on historical accounts and highlights her significant contributions to missionary work alongside her husband and other early missionaries.

(4.16) Staying Focused on Our Purpose--Like Addison Pratt

(4.16) Staying Focused on Our Purpose--Like Addison Pratt

Addison Pratt initiated his missionary endeavors in Tahiti in 1844, marking an earlier start compared to other Polynesian islands, with subsequent missions launched in Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fiji, and eventually incorporating New Caledonia into the Tahiti Papeete mission by 1968. Overcoming language barriers was a significant challenge; initially, Pratt relied on a local translator and taught in English, but he soon achieved fluency in Tahitian by immersing himself in the culture and interacting closely with native speakers. His dedication led to the baptism of many individuals, including his translator and sailors, demonstrating his commitment to spreading the gospel in the local language. Pratt’s story also touches on the complexities of navigating the intertwined roles of government and church in French Polynesia. Despite facing pressure to assume political duties, he remained steadfast in his focus on missionary work, even expressing concerns to Brigham Young about being perceived more as a political leader than a church figure. Addison Pratt’s experience underscores the importance of cultural immersion for language learning and the significance of staying true to one’s mission amidst external challenges.

    (4.15) Relationships and the Gathering

    (4.15) Relationships and the Gathering

This episode emphasizes the importance of relationships in the dissemination of the gospel, using the biblical account of Peter and Cornelius to underscore the transformative power of cross-cultural evangelism. It then connects this theme to the historical mission of 1843, when missionaries were dispatched to non-English speaking areas, akin to Peter’s calling to visit Cornelius. Among these missionaries was Addison Pratt, a former whaler who, despite a tumultuous past, had developed a rudimentary understanding of Hawaiian during his travels. After receiving a patriarchal blessing, he and three other missionaries, including Benjamin F. Grouard and Noah Rogers, set sail to preach in Hawaii. Their arduous six-month voyage took them past Australia and eventually to an island south of Tahiti, where they encountered both hospitable reception and challenges, such as the death of one missionary from tuberculosis.
Upon reaching Tubuai, the missionaries experienced a warm welcome, leading one to remain there while Addison and the others planned to travel to Tahiti, unaware of the war transpiring there. Instead, they redirected to the Tuamutu Islands. The significance of building strong relationships is highlighted through Addison’s interactions with the Tupoy locals and his missionary endeavors that bridged cultural gaps through language. The text concludes by noting the upcoming 180th-anniversary celebration of Addison Pratt’s arrival on Tubuai, an event that church leaders will attend to honor the legacy of early missionary work and the enduring power of relationships in spreading faith.

Short and sweet

I listen to this with my kids (ages 15, 12 and 9). They struggle with mental health issues (ADHD, anxiety…) and these brief episodes are short enough to hold their attention and simple enough for them to grasp the concepts. It has been a great conversation starter for us to discuss sensitive topics that affect the peace and harmony in our home and in our hearts.
