Fortune's Wheel is a narrative history podcast focusing on the Late Middle Ages, approximately the mid-900s to 1492. This largely overlooked time period would see the formation of modern national borders as well as tell the intricate story of a land opening its eyes from the intellectual Dark Ages and into the most pivotal movements that will re-structure the world we know today: the Age of Exploration, the Reformation, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment.

Understanding the Why

Having heard the tale of the Norman Conquest many times before I've always been left with unanswered questions. Jonathan's telling takes the time to explain the multitude of domestic and external alliances that motivated Emma, Godwin, and Edward to bring us to 1066.

Great commitment

I really appreciate Jonathan’s commitment to telling this time period’s story over several seasons. Definitely worth a listen!

Parler?

I’m quitting this show because of the host’s associations.

In the William the Bastard episode the host castigates Hillary Clinton and the “extreme left” for dehumanizing comments about Trump’s deplorable supporters. Really? Of all dehumanizing comments out there, that’s what he chose?

I continued to listen as this is a phase of history I’d like to know more about. However, at the beginning of episode 37, the host encourages folks to join him on various social media platforms including Parler. Unsubscribe.

Decent people don’t support Parler, insurrection, or the Big Lie. If I can’t trust the host to understand this — I can’t trust the host. There are too many quality history podcasts out there to waste time on this one. I’m off to listen to the next episode of The History of the Crusades.
