BONUS - Interview with Authors of "Secular Surge"

BONUS - Interview with Authors of "Secular Surge"

With so many Americans turning away from religion, it's natural to wonder whether a Secular Left can ever challenge the Religious Right. A new book attempts to answer that question. It's called "Secular Surge: A New Fault Line in American Politics," and it's written by three people who know this topic better than most people ever could.

David E. Campbell is the Packey J. Dee Professor of American Democracy at the University of Notre Dame who has written extensively about religion's role in American politics.

Geoffrey C. Layman is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. He, too, has written a lot about religion and politics and is currently the co-editor of the journal Political Behavior.

David and Geoffrey are joining me today.

The third author is John C. Green, the Emeritus Director of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron.

We talked about whether the "secular surge" has peaked, if the GOP can appeal to non-religious voters, and the single issue that could unite atheists and evangelicals.

Alice Greczyn is an actress and writer who may be most familiar to audiences from her role as Mads Rybak in the ABC Family show The Lying Game.

What audiences may not know is that Alice experienced what she calls a "painful yet rewarding transition from Christianity to atheism." She now lives in Los Angeles and has just published a book about her journey out of religion called "Wayward."

A lot of content that interests me

Hemant and Jessica sit down to go over news stories that grab my attention during the week as well as some that I missed. My only complaint is that Jessica occasionally lumps me into unlikable categories in which I do not belong. Yes, I'm a man. Yes, I'm a boomer. Yes, I'm white. But I'm also a godless liberal hippie nerd. Remember, Jessica, all generalizations are false.

Vaccine Guilt for Jessica

Been listening for awhile. Love the banter back and forth.

I thought I would address Jessica’s “post-vaccination guilt.” As 30 year veteran of Fire and Emergency Services, I thought I would try to alleviate some of Jessica’s moral dissonance about getting the vaccine. I’ve received the vaccine as well been part of administering them. We’re mightily trying to have some semblance of order in the vaccination process. Between cancelled appointments, too many multi-dose vials being opened, and post-vaccination panic attacks, the entire operation descends into anarchy usually by the afternoon. (I’m exaggerating of course). My point being, if you can get a vaccine, get it. More doses are arriving everyday in California (“thank you Gavin Newsome”). It won’t be long before it will time to vaccinate the Karen’s, Qanon crowd, and mask-holes. That will likely bog down the system. So you have to get it when you can.

Love the Podcast. Every week, I look forward to Jessica’s laugh and Hemet getting trashed for having no friends, all the time. (I’ll be your friend Hemet). Keep up the good work.

What type of dog is Dottie?

I like the podcast and hemehts appearance on jeopardy. He can be a tough boss for Jess to work for though. What game show will he go on next? What type of dog is Dottie? I imagine her being a tiny dog that Jess carries around in her purse.
