Memory Verse: Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
Myth #1: God wants you to be happy.
Problem #1: If God primarily wants me to be happy, then whatever makes me happy must be right. And whatever makes me unhappy must be wrong.
• What God actually teaches: Happiness is not a standard to determine right or wrong.
Problem #2: If God primarily wants me to be happy, bad things (discomfort, delay, and suffering) cannot be part of God’s plan.
• What God actually teaches: The presence of bad things in my life can be part of God’s plan.
Problem #3: If God primarily wants me to be happy, then I’ll begin to worship comfort, money, pleasure, and possessions.
• What God actually teaches: The absence of good things in my life should not prevent me from worshipping God.
Many walk away from God because of this myth.
• If you believe God primarily wants you happy, when you’re not happy you will be forced to believe that God failed.
“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:15-17
God desires your heart more than your happiness.
