46: Matching the Hatch Series - Part 5 - The Majestic Bighorn - Guest Author/Guide; Steve Galetta

Every time I go to this river and see the stark plains, rolling hills and buttes, I can only think of the bad day at the office General Custer had, wishing he never got on his horse that June day as his troops were rightly so demolished by the proud natives. As opposed to Custer on the other hand, those German brown trout settlers to the new world that swam up the Big Horn from the Yellowstone; or were haphazardly stocked by a settler’s milk canister, were on the road to a trutta Mecca. Once they felt the Bighorn’s cold waters and tasted the amazingly fertile food-rich fauna, they established one of the finest brown trout dynasties on the planet. Bighorn book author/ guide, and former Buffalonian: Steve Galetta, discusses the nuances, hatches, terrestrials and tactics needed to fool its bigger browns and rainbows that swim in these vast Montana/Wyoming American trout waters-don’t miss this one!

A Guide’s Perspective: Iconic Guest: John G Miller –The East Coast Early Season Tactics and Flies

We start off the ‘Matching the Hatch’ multi-episode/ docu-series with this bug-crazed iconic Catskill guide- ( John will have a two-part session)  This undisputed “bug doctor”: Johnny Miller, has forgotten more about insects and hatches in a week than most people will learn in a lifetime. I seriously have never seen anyone so possessed by entomology and his amazing macro aquatic insect photographing passion as Johnny. Along with chasing super selective, sipping wild big browns and rainbows with his clients, his photography has appeared in numerous books like My “Selectivity” and “Brown Trout Nexus”, also in books for Dick Pobst, Carl Richards, and Al Caucci, and including countless magazine articles. He has had aquarium tanks in his basement and has stayed up all night photographing the emerging stages of all mayflies/ stoneflies/ caddis as long as I have known him… don’t miss this one!

41: Atlantic Salmon Federation's CEO Bill Taylor - The Plight of Atlantic Salmon - Civilizations Founding Fish

41: Atlantic Salmon Federation's CEO Bill Taylor - The Plight of Atlantic Salmon - Civilizations Founding Fish

There has never been a fish on earth that we humans haven’t been fascinated with and simply loved to death. The Romans on their conquest of Europe and the British Isles saw them leaping tall waterfalls and named them “salar”- the leaper . Gaulish Aquitania clans and tribes swore allegiance to the god Salmo rather than to Caesar, and thus perished by the sword .

Early cave dwelling Neanderthals drew etchings of salmon at the caves of Lascaux in France near the River Vézère . When cave dwellers needed food for winter , salmon ran up rivers by the thousands all the way up to the Alps and throughout Europe. First Nations Indigenous peoples relied on the runs of salmon in North America /Greenland-and northern Europe. Royalty built castles and large land holdings on Atlantic salmon rivers, which are heavily controlled and coveted even to this day- the royal’s Balmoral estate in Scotland is one such example. Salmon traded equally with gold in Rome during the empire and their wealth as a commodity today is immeasurable to populations and communities around the globe, from the Canadian Maritimes to Iceland/ Scotland/Norway/ Russia . Today, , besides being one of the most highly sought after game fish for fly fishers and commercial fisherman alike, their gastronomical delights appeal to palates and chefs that crave them for their delicious flesh-omega 3 for heart health benefits/Keto diets. But can this insatiable consumption be sustained by what is left in the oceans? Each time you order salmon in the restaurants you are part of the problem; and also part of the solution to saving them, and hopefully putting an end to disease filled farm raised salmon. Nevertheless , they are being driven to endangerment and extinction in some ecosystems.

Unique offering

I appreciate the wide spectrum of topics and guests presented on Hallowed Waters. Yes, there are times Matt can be especially verbose, but it comes from his passion and curiosity, and the fact that he’s wildly extroverted. It’s a rare thing for there to be long-form conversations that bring modern perspectives juxtaposed with foundational texts and concepts, and the fact that we have that here is something I am very thankful to Matt for creating.

Updated 2024: Regrettably came back and DLed an episode featuring a friend and got even more annoyed at the rambling, interrupting host who doesn’t let guests get a word in edgewise. Stars are solely for the guests, their content, and the sound quality.

Previous review from 2023: I deleted the episodes I thought I wanted to listen to because the host goes on huge, wild tangents and inserts needless political nonsense into episodes. For Pete’s sake, let the guests talk and stop interrupting and talking over them!!!!!!!! The verbal diarrhea makes abundantly clear that Matt doesn’t use or stick to show notes. The two stars I’ve levied is for excellent sound quality and the expert level of guests. The final turnoff: Matt’s efforts to recognize women anglers and be inclusive in his language was completely canceled out by the inappropriate FLIRTING/remarking about attractiveness to his female guest. Super gross. 🤮

I just started listening to Hallowed Waters and I can’t get enough. There are a range of interesting topics and discussion shared that digs deep into this sport and there is always something to be learned. I particularly enjoyed the 4 part series on the Catskills and the guests they brought on as they are in my opinion among the most respected and knowledgeable people in the sport including the host. As a bug nut and dry fly enthusiast and someone that makes a couple trips to the Delaware system every year this was my favorite series so far. Highly recommended and looking forward to more!
