When Does My Athlete Need an MRI?

A common question health care professionals may get from patients and their families when it comes to musculoskeletal problems is about getting an MRI to evaluate an injury further. An MRI can be helpful in situations, but when is it really needed? Today on the Healthy Young Athlete Podcast we talk about MRIs, what they tell us and what they don’t, and is it absolutely necessary following an injury to your young athlete.

How Do I Choose the Best Helmet or Headgear?

How Do I Choose the Best Helmet or Headgear?

A common question I get in clinic when seeing patients for concussion is “what is the best helmet out there for my son or daughter?” Or what headgear is the best for sports that use headgear instead of helmets? Typically, we have the discussion that there is no helmet or headgear that prevents concussion, but we do know that some helmets and headgear perform better than other. But how is that determined? Today on the podcast we have the director of the Virginia Tech Helmet lab who will help us navigate the world of helmet and headgear ratings. We’ll learn the process about testing and how you can use that information to make an informed decision for a helmet purchase.

Why Are AEDs Important In Sport?

Why Are AEDs Important In Sport?

On June 14, Danish soccer star Christian Eriksen suddenly and unexpectedly collapsed during a championship match. It was suspected he had collapsed due to an abnormal rhythm in his heart and the medical staff on site wisely applied the automated external defibrillator, or AED, and a shock was applied. It was felt this likely saved his life.

Although these issues in younger athletes, and all athletes, are infrequent events, having quick access to an AED can certainly make a difference in saving a life. Today on the podcast, we will discuss why AEDs are important to have readily available at sporting events and how you can make sure your sports organizations are on board.

    Abdominal Trauma in Sports

    Abdominal Trauma in Sports

Athletes sustain all sorts of musculoskeletal injuries. I’d put good money that most athletic trainers and sports medicine physicians feel pretty comfortable evaluating an ankle, knee or shoulder. But what happens when the trauma is to the abdomen? How confident do you feel in identifying something that may be brewing to one of the internal organs in the abdomen? Today on the podcast we will cover sport-related abdominal trauma with an emergency medicine physician.

The AMSSM Position Statement on Mental Health

The AMSSM Position Statement on Mental Health

Sports medicine professionals interact with athletes daily, many of whom have some underlying mental health issue. Commonly this may be anxiety or depression. We know that many athletes don’t feel comfortable disclosing their mental health issues or concerns or often they may go undiagnosed for long periods of time. They can affect athletic performance and the symptoms of many mental health issues may masquerade themselves as other medical problems leading to a delayed diagnosis and treatment. Today on the podcast we are going to discuss the recently released position statement from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, or AMSSM, about Mental Health in the Athlete.

A Conversation with Olympian Rachael Flatt (Mental Health Awareness Month 2021)

A Conversation with Olympian Rachael Flatt (Mental Health Awareness Month 2021)

We continue our series during Mental Health Awareness Month discussing mental health issues facing athletes. Think that professional athletes have it all together and there aren’t any pressures? How about if you make the Olympics for your sport? Everything will be great from there on out, right? It’s easy to walk away. No pressures…..well maybe not the case. How can an athlete still make an impact in their sport after the competition ends? Today on the podcast we are joined by a former Olympic figure skater, soon to have her doctorate in psychology. We’ll talk about her athletic career and how she is now making her mark in the world of mental health of the athlete.

All of these things are things to consider. Today on the podcast, I have a very special guest to me. My son. He suffered a sports injury his sophomore year which led to a significant acute decline in his mental health. We are going to discuss his experiences and his story.
