1 Thessalonians 2:1-16 | Ps. Jeffrey Susila

One Thing: As God’s people, let’s live Gospel-centered lives that are pleasing to God.



I. Not pleasing man, but pleasing God (vv. 1-4)

II. Not using others to build up yourself, but using your life to build up others (vv. 5-12)

a. Like a caring mother (vv.5-9)

b. Like an encouraging father (vv.10-12)

III. Not hindering others, but helping others to hear the Word of God (vv. 13-16)

One Thing: Give thanks to God for evidence of salvation that we see in one another.



Why is Paul confident in the Thessalonians’ salvation?

Because Paul sees evidence that they’ve...

I. Received the true Gospel (vv. 1-5a)

II. Imitated joy amidst affliction (vv. 5b-6)

III. Exemplified faith to others (vv. 7-10)

One Thing: Our refuge is the Judge of all nations who will bring final retribution and restoration.

Application: “Seek refuge in the LORD your God”...


For your own sins.


In others’ sins against you.

One Thing: We can rejoice now in the LORD for on that final Day, he will fully restore.


Three assurances that the LORD will fully restore:


The LORD has personal desires for his own possessions (vv.18-25)


The LORD is personally devoted to his own honor and glory (vv.26-29)


The LORD promised to deliver his people from his own judgment (vv.30-32)

One Thing: The Lord warns us of coming judgment because He lovingly wants us to return to Him.



The Lord’s warning: “Judgment is coming” (vv. 1-11)


The Lord’s invitation: “Return to me” (vv. 12-17)

- Return to the Lord with all your heart (vv.12-13a)
- Return to the Lord who is gracious and merciful (vv.13b-14)
- Return to the Lord together as His people (vv.15-17)
