Each week, horticulturalist Felder Rushing shares stories, answers questions and just talks gardening. Of course, you’ll hear a bit of “cheesy music” in every program and you might hear a bad joke or two as well. The Gestalt Gardener is a long-time favorite on MPB Think Radio, due in no small part to Felder’s laid-back, your-neighbors-might-talk-but-so-what approach to gardening.
Email Felder anytime at garden@mpbonline.org and listen Friday mornings at 9 and Saturday mornings at 10 to The Gestalt Gardener on MPB Think Radio. And in the meantime, as Felder says, get out and get dirty.

A pleasant listen

Always a friendly, fun and educational listen. Love Felder’s calm and flexible approach to gardening and Java is great too!

Not good

I know Felder, met him a few times.

To a true beginning gardener who knows absolutely nothing about plants, biology, etc. Felder is an ok starting point.

However, to a gardener with any basic knowledge, Felder’s advice leaves much to be desired.

Oftentimes, Felder feels stuck in the 1980’s, as most of his plant recommendations have been out of fashion for decades. He clearly has not kept up with trends in horticulture, and if he has, he certainly does not relay that info to his audience.

He routinely promotes terrible invasive species. In almost every show! Eleagnus, Liriope, English Ivy, Ligustrum, just an endless stream of terrible non-native invasive species emanate from Felder’s mouth without hesitation or consideration.

He also routinely brags about being a former president of the Mississippi Native Plant Society, but then he never promotes native plants! An example: in June of 2023, a lady called in and wanted native plant recommendations to put between a few blueberries. Instead of suggesting things like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, Chrysogonum, bee balm, or any of the hundreds of plants native to Mississippi that would’ve been appropriate, Felder’s suggestion was “Get a few Lantana and zinnias and call it a day”. Nothing else. So he could have been the dang MNPS founder with a million native plants tattooed on his face and it seemingly wouldn’t influence his suggestions. He’s not going above and beyond. He thinks his audience is dumb. Instead of teaching to the level of the smartest kid in class, or even the level of the kid in the middle, he’s teaching to the level of the kid in the back of the class wearing a helmet and drooling.

We need plant people who will stay ahead of the trends in the industry. Who will promote all of the great native plants that evolved in Mississippi’s climate. We need someone who will champion the state’s natural resources now more than ever.

Felder, just retire buddy. You had a good run. All things must come to an end.

Southern-eccentric gardening. A joy.

Felder Rushing paints his bean supports purple, sticks plastic flowers into live plants that look too plain, and is raising a baby opossum named Pogo. Callers with a marvelous range of Mississippi accents ask about problems like tomatoes with black bottoms, and Felder, a trained horticulturalist, offers useful fixes. But he’s also sneaking in life lessons: live and let live; be fully part of this living world; and a few wrinkly leaves won’t kill you.
