151 // Is Blade Runner CyberPunk?

151 // Is Blade Runner CyberPunk?

Is Blade Runner considered CyberPunk? That's the question that inspired this month’s episode. The word cyberpunk has been tossed around in relation to Blade Runner for many years. Patrick & Jaime have talked briefly about cyberpunk while never fully investigating the topic. For this episode, we’ve invited cyberpunk author T.R. Napper and first time guest and inspiration behind this episode, longtime listener a.t. johnston.
Join us as we explore this fascinating topic with the experts.

150 // Blade Runner 2099 News, Rumors, and Speculation

150 // Blade Runner 2099 News, Rumors, and Speculation

A curious bit of news recently broke suggesting Blade Runner 2099 is going to begin production in Europe in May. While we haven't as yet been able to verify this is 100% factual, it's got us thinking: what's the state of this thing?
On today's episode, Jaime and Patrick go through some of what we're hearing around the internet about this Prime Video series helmed by Silk Luisa. They also discuss some of her previous work, and some recent series that have hit—and missed—the mark when it comes to adapting science fiction and noir IPs for television.

(Special Presentation) FRAME RATE: Godzilla Minus One (2023)

2023 was quite a year at the movies. "Barbenheimer" became a cultural phenomenon. Marvel lost its mojo. And a ten million-dollar subtitled Godzilla movie became the most successful live-action Japanese film in US history.
But Godzilla Minus One is so, so much more than just a box office success story. It's a deeply human tale that feels urgently suited to our time in world history. It manages to be both terrifying and profoundly moving, with unforgettable performances, a rigorous attention to detail, and one of the great musical scores of the 21st century.
It's also an absolute masterclass in how to create character-driven storytelling. The characters in Minus One feel like living, breathing, fully-realized human beings.
In this impassioned episode of Frame Rate, Jaime, Christian, and lifelong Godzilla nut Patrick discuss why this film is so important, and examine the reasons why Takashi Yamazaki's new Goji vision is resonating so deeply with audiences around the world.

Just amazing

I love both Blade Runner movies and have seen them many times each. This podcast is great at explaining and contextualizing the BR universe.

Fiery, the Angels fell

This podcast is a nothing short of new obsession. I have been obsessed with Blade Runner since sneakily watching it in my teenage years, and this show is a triumph in its detail and care for the material. I’ve come to treasure hosts Jamie’s impeccable taste, and Patrick’s meticulous attention to detail. I only wish I’d found it years ago, but I’m steadily catching up on the richness of their back catalogue. Thank you for this gift of a podcast.
