Delightful & Informative

Haven’t listened to season 1 yet, but I’ve been having a grand time with season 2, all about Schubert’s Winterreise. I discovered and fell in love with the song cycle a few years back (because, ridiculously enough, I used it as a motif in a fanfic 😆). I’m always in need of a engaging podcast to listen to whilst doing yard work, and I thought, “Hm, wonder if anybody’s done a deep dive on Winterreise?" Lo and behold, Follow the Lieder.

Mandy has a lovely speaking voice, and she and co-host Brian have a great, amusing rapport. The podcast is full of interesting facts and thought-provoking interpretations. Despite loving classical music, I still have something of a tin ear, so I appreciate Mandy pointing many things I missed, like the cuckoo’s call in “Frühlingstraum”. And, of course, one gets to enjoy lovely performances by Mandy & Dr. Reese. Heartily recommend.

Excellent podcast for anyone who likes art song

I searched for a long time for a podcast that talks about German art songs and stumbled across this wonderful podcast in 2020. After a long hiatus I thought it was dead but it’s back with a vengeance, now going through Schubert’s Winterreise. I have listened to almost all the shows and all of the Winterreise episodes. The podcast has introduced me to new songs (like Mendelssohn’s Schilflied) and deepened my understanding of old favorites like the Winterreise songs. I love this and look forward to each new episode. Please keep it going!! It is appreciated.
