Episode 21: Holly and Gerry Fitzgerald Part 2 - Jungle Survival
We’re back with part two in this tale.
Holly and Gerry find themselves in a dead end swamp. After finding a smaller raft; they decide to abandon The Pink Palace in favour of it, to paddle their way out.
Only, storms and exhaustion forced them back to The Pink Palace. They fought off starvation and tried to survive. After further unsuccessful attempts to leave the swamp, Holly and Gerry focused on surviving until help arrived.
They were forced to eat toothpaste, slugs, frogs, grasshoppers and baby birds in their fight for survival. When they were rescued, they were less than 24 hours from death. Listen to how Holly and Gerry survived once they hit the swamp and what they had to do to make it out alive.

Episode 20: Holly and Gerry Fitzgerald - Part 1 - Jungle Survival
Holly and Gerry Fitzgerald married in 1970 and wanted to have the honeymoon of a lifetime.
They worked all the hours they could to save money for year of travelling.
In late 1972, they started their honeymoon, travelling South America. In the start of January 1973, they set off in a plane from Pucallpa. (Yes, that is the exact same town that Juliane Koepcke's plane went down in, just a year prior).
They now found themselves in the jungle having to find their own way out.
After some friendly advice from a fellow traveller they built a raft and started their journey down the Madre de Dios River to freedom. Things got rough for Holly and Gerry.

NMNT Shorty Episode 4 - Poon Lim - Lost at Sea
Poon Lim holds the world record for longest survival at sea on a life-raft. Whilst working on a British freighter, it was hit by the Germans with torpedoes. In two minutes the ship sank. Poon leapt overboard and found himself floating 250 miles away from land. After two hours, he found a life-raft. Poon climbed aboard and started 133 days of survival.

Episode 19: Steven Stayner - Abduction
Steven Stayner was just 7 years old when he was abducted on December 4th, 1972. He spent the next 7 years living with a vile paedophile named Kenneth Parnell. Parnell, kept Steven for these years, moving around California, enrolling Steven into various schools under the name of Dennis Parnell.
Parnell struggled to hold down a stable job, kept on the move and abusing Steven. He made several attempts with Steven to abduct other children, only to have them fail every time. Recruiting another person to abduct a child, Parnell abducted 5 year-old, Timothy White, in 1980.
Steven, being determined to spare Timothy the same fate he had endured, escaped with him in the middle of the night. They went to a police station and explained their stories.
Kenneth Parnell was arrested the next morning.
Steven, once returned to his grateful parents and family, had a hard time readjusting to his new life.

Episode 18: Ada Blackjack - Arctic Survival
Ada Blackjack was an Inupiat born woman, originally named Ada Delutuk, but was actually raised by Methodist missionaries in Nome, Alaska.
At 16, she married an abusive man named Jack Blackjack and had three children with him. Only one of those children survived past infancy. Her son Bennet, who had tuberculosis. After Jack left Ada and her son destitute, she had to find a way to care for their son, alone.
An opportunity arose for a Native seamstress that spoke English. It paid well and would cover the medical costs she needed to have Bennet treated. It would require her absence for 1-2 years. Leaving Bennet in an orphanage temporarily she joined the voyage.
Ada at 23 was the only woman in a team of 4 male explorers. She was hired to cook, clean and sew for them. The mission was to claim Wrangel Island. Only, when they got there, things didn't go to plan and Ada started a 2 year fight for her survival. She, in fact, became the only survivor.

Episode 17: Animal Survivor Stories - Wojtek
Wojtek was a Syrian bear that was bought by Polish soldiers just at the start of World War 2.
He was raised by them and lived with them for many years, enjoying many a beer, cigarettes and even learned to walk on his hind legs like his fellow comrades.
Wojtek became an official soldier and was even promoted to Corporal at one point.
Eventually he ended up in Scotland where he spent the remainder of his life.
