A podcast for celebration, commiseration, and support through grad school for the students who are living it (or want to). Join Elana Gloger, a full-time 4th year doctoral student and part-time human, as she chats with fellow grad students about their professional and personal experiences, without taking either too seriously. Episodes include conversations about students' Day in the Life, conversations about Diverse Identities and Racism in Academia, and themed episodes (like, Mental Health in Grad School or Resources for Efficiency). As grad students, we all love what we do, struggle with what we do, need support through what we do, and should be celebrated for what we do and 'Dear Grad Student' is the place for it all.

The Fallout of the 2020 Summer of Racial Reckoning in Grad School & Beyond
In today's episode of Dear Grad Student, Elana chats with Dr. Apryl Alexander to discuss progress made (or not) since the 2020 'Summer of Racial Reckoning' following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others by police. What does it look like to reflect on our privilege, speak about that privilege to uplift others, and bring the safety and well-being of minoritized groups to the forefront of practice? Institutions have shown where and how they “care” about the well-being of marginalized students, staff, and faculty.

Team Talk, Lab Meeting, Journal Club #1: The UC Strike & Unionizing
In this ~special~ episode of Dear Grad Student, Elana speaks with her DGS team members, Aubrey Tingler and William Ota, about the University of California strike, the conditions which drive grad students to strike, & their views on the topic.
If you’re a grad student, you've probably been told you're a student when it comes to pay and benefits, & an employee when you try to access student services. This means graduate students are vulnerable to exploitation by universities. On top of the emotional and financial costs of pursuing graduate education, working conditions have not kept up with inflation, rising class sizes, or cost of living, which makes it hard to survive for anyone, let alone the many marginalized groups in academia. In California, this resulted in three unions represented graduate student educators (TAs), graduate student researchers (GSRs), and post-docs in the University of California system to go on strike. Listen for the DGS team talk to learn more.

This is a MUST LISTEN TO Podcast
I am an incoming developmental psychology Ph.D. Student and I was extremely excited to get admitted into a program during an application cycle taking place during COVID. That excitement however shifted into fear throughout the summer that I somehow wasn’t going to be good enough and how I probably scammed my way into a program. The imposter syndrome hit me big time. Hearing about this podcast was brilliant as I was introduced to numerous graduate students who had the same relatable experiences! Being able to listen to different students and hear many stories throughout several aspects of life during graduate school has been amazing! It has really helped to mitigate my nervousness and anxiety going into my first semester and I couldn’t have felt more lucky being introduced to it right before starting graduate school. If you are a graduate student or are thinking of becoming a graduate student in the future, listen to this podcast! It is really eye opening and it is doing wonders for the graduate student community.
I love this Podcast
I love how self aware and socially conscious Elana is !!! Elana please host an international student !!!!!!
What we all need!
I stumbled across this podcast the day it aired and I’m so glad I did. There are plenty of grad student podcasts, but Elana is a great host who keeps it light and informative! That can be a tough balance, but she does it so well. I’m a second year psych PhD student and I love hearing the different perspectives of the students across different years! You must subscribe. Right now!!
