The Rebel and the Kingdom: The Secret Mission to Overthrow the North Korean Regime

The Rebel and the Kingdom: The Secret Mission to Overthrow the North Korean Regime

How did an Ivy League activist become a global fugitive? In this bonus audio episode, Bradley Hope, co-founder of Project Brazen, recounts his first encounter with Adrian Hong, who led an underground organization to undermine the Kim Jong-un regime by helping top North Korean diplomats defect. After a fake kidnapping of a top North Korean diplomat in Madrid went awry, a wanted poster for Adrian was circulated by the U.S. Marshals, sending him into hiding.

This episode of BRAZEN PRESENTS features an exclusive interview with Christopher Ahn, the only person to be arrested after the failed kidnapping stunt in Madrid. Christopher describes meeting Adrian over ten years ago and how he got involved with his underground group. In 2017, Christopher played a key role in ferrying Kim Han-sol, the nephew of Kim Jong-un, to safety after his dad Kim Jong-nam was assassinated in Malaysia. Christopher’s life has been upturned in the aftermath of the Madrid incident, and he is currently fighting extradition to Spain.

The Rebel and the Kingdom is out 1 November 2022. To learn more about the unbelievable story of Adrian, Christopher and Free Joseon, and to pre-order the book, visit www.rebelandthekingdom.com. Audiobook and e-book versions are also available.

Excellent reporting

I don’t know how I started following Laura on Instagram. My interest into insights on Hong Kong. I feel that she has been my prime source of on the ground information there through her photography and prose. Now she is taking me to Ukraine with sounds and glimpses into everyday people’s lives. Just listened to episode 1, looking forward to the next. Thank you.

Well Done

Fascinating story and hard to believe it’s basically been covered up. Well investigated and reported.

Hits close to home

Interesting interviews with Fat Leonard. I served on the USS George Washington, which was under Leonard’s spell back in 2011-2013. I’m sure many if not all of my port calls were arranged by GDMA. One of my former CO’s, although not mentioned in this podcast, was one of the senior level officers indicted in this case and is still awaiting his trial. Overall, a sad story that will take the Navy years of not decades to reconcile with in terms of its ethical and moral implications.
