Episode 134: You're So Stupid! (The Four Horsemen Part 3)

We are in third week of our series on the Gottman’s Four Horsemen.   One of the most dangerous of all the horsemen is contempt, which John Gottman calls the “sulfuric acid for love”.   Contempt begins when simmering negative thoughts about our spouse grow into a belief that our spouse is inferior to us and is insignificant. In this episode we share about the dangers of contempt and how it can creep into our marriage.

Episode 132: You Always You Never (The Four Horsemen Part 1)

Episode 132: You Always You Never (The Four Horsemen Part 1)

This episode is our first in a series where we are discussing the Gottmans’ work on the “Four Horsemen”: the four conflict patterns that can cause damage in our relationships and marriages.  We’re starting with criticism, which is bringing up a concern by describing our partner (You always you never) and attacking them as a person.  When the horse of criticism is running wild in our marriage, we will feel devalued, rejected, and hurt. In this episode, we share our struggle with criticism and some of the ways to combat it.

Where have you been m whole life?

I know you’re on episode 75 or so, but I still chose to begin at the beginning and I am a half a dozen episodes in or so. I highly recommend that others just beginning start with the first episode. It has helped me learn a little bit about who you are, and understand how applicable your words and opinions are. It all feels so common sense, but even these first few episodes have really helped me formulate some better ways to relate to my spouse. It also helped me to find the right words to help him feel, respected, loved, and heard. Thank you.
