City Cast Las Vegas is a daily podcast and newsletter created by and for locals (and locals-at-heart) that’ll challenge the easy narratives about our city … and, okay, maybe confirm a few of them, too. Las Vegas is a city of reinvention, bursting at the seams as it welcomes newcomers into its various incarnations as a service-worker union town, a military town, a college town, and, most recently, a sports town.
There’s a four-mile street testifying to our entrepreneurial genius, not far from pockets of staggering inequality. Great wealth runs through our city, but how much of that actually stays in Vegas? We’re independent in spirit, but also ruled by orange traffic cones. Our 2.5 million residents anchor an ever-changing city of 42 million visitors.
Join us every morning for the messy, delightful, complicated conversations that Las Vegans are having: You’ll hear us ask hard questions about where we’ll get our water when Lake Mead runs out, and how we’ll keep housing affordable. We’ll argue over our favorite Chinatown bars, and share insider tips on the best tacos in town. Is Yucca Mountain Coming Back From the Dead?
As the old Nevada lore goes, Senator Harry Reid rose up in battle and killed the Yucca Mountain beast in faraway DC, leaving it good and dead. Right? Well, not exactly. The contested nuclear waste site, just 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, has recently come up again in a Congressional hearing, putting the Nevada delegation and state nuclear commision officials on red alert. Today, co-host Dayvid Figler talks with Nevada Independent reporter Gabby Birenbaum about what danger these new rumblings pose, how an election year plays into the nuclear politics, and what it would take to put a stake in the heart of Yucca Mountain.

Interesting topics ranging from entirely local to nationally relevant w/ a touch of Vegas. Also, the 20 min episodes make it the perfect commuter listen. Like a morning / afternoon drive radio show, but only the great commentary. Only critique, if I have to have one, is some conversations are one-sided between guests and host perspective. Would prefer a little more neutrality from hosts or adding another guest for diversity of opinions. Regardless, it’s always a fun listen and a podcast I recommend to locals in So. Nevada.

I recently moved to the Las Vegas area and am really enjoying using this podcast to get to know my new city. The hosts have great food and entertainment recommendations, as well as thorough coverage of local news stories.
