In episode 33, I delve into the controversial interpretation of Genesis 6:1-4. This passage describes the intermixing of divine beings (sons of God) and human women, resulting in the Nephilim, often interpreted as giants.  I address two main alternative viewpoints to this supernatural interpretation: the Sethite view and the divinized human rulers view. I argue that both lack sufficient biblical and extra-biblical support.
Drawing from various biblical texts and recent scholarly research, particularly the work of Amar Annus on Mesopotamian literature parallels, I support the supernatural worldview. This perspective not only aligns better with ancient texts but also sheds light on various biblical narratives such as the Flood and the commandments to conquer certain people groups in Canaan. My aim with the podcast is to expand listeners' understanding of biblical supernatural worldview and encourage deeper engagement with scriptural texts.
