Spring Cleaning with Kitzy and Andrea

Spring Cleaning with Kitzy and Andrea

Seems like the year just started, but suddenly we're halfway through Spring? Instead of talking with a guest this week, Kitzy and Andrea wanted to share some of the music they've been listening to lately. For Andrea, that means a carefully selected handful of songs. For Kitzy, that means playing spin the wheel with their New Music playlist. There's lots of great stuff from the past couple of months that we haven't gotten a chance to share with you. Don't forget, if you like what you hear, you can find links to pick up music from these artists and to follow them, so you can keep up with their various plans for new music, tours, and all that good stuff.

    Sweet Juice Fest Collective

    Sweet Juice Fest Collective

Listeners will be familiar with this week's Left of the Dial guests because they’re the team behind Sweet Juice Fest, a queer feminist musical festival that centers local diverse artists and creators from the Philadelphia region. Last year, the sold-out festival was held at Rigby Mansion in Germantown and featured some of our favorites here at Left of the Dial including Sug Daniels, Popcorn Daddy, and The Lunar Year, all of whom make up the Sweet Juice Fest collective and who joined Andrea on the show today to talk about this year’s Sweet Juice Fest which will be held again in July. But even before that, they’ve got a really cool event coming up in just a few days, the Sweet Juice Fundraiser, which will be held on April 26th at Dolphin Tavern. Listen to hear some incredible music from the talented, thoughtful, and joyful folks who make up the Sweet Juice Collective and make sure you stick around because they announce the first act who's going to be playing the festival in July, and it's a really amazing artist Philly folks are gonna be stoked about!
The Sweet Juice Fest fundraiser is this Wednesday, April 26th at Dolphin Tavern. Get your tickets now.

    Jersey Interchange with Christian Lesperance

    Jersey Interchange with Christian Lesperance

Christian Lesperance is the mastermind behind Jersey Interchange, a collaboration series that reimagines the songs of the New Jersey punk, hardcore, emo, and ska scenes of the late 90s and early 2000s. Christian joins Andrea on the podcast today because Jersey Interchange is releasing its debut full-length album C1, out May 5th on Sinking Ship Records. C1 features covers of artists who made their name in the Jersey scene (bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart) covered by artists who also made their name in the Jersey scene (in bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart). This album is an absolute Jersey love fest, but it's also just a collection of really great covers of really great songs and an example of something really beautiful that celebrates collaboration and expression and community and all that good stuff we could use a little more of these days.
Pre-orders for C1 have already started. They'll be celebrating the album with a release show on May 13th at Twin Elephant Brewing Co. in Chatham NJ. Folks from bands including Shades Apart, Vision, Lanemeyer, NJ Joystick, Avery, One cool Guy, right Turn Eddie and lots more will be taking turns playing acoustic sets, and the whole thing will be headlined by comedian and Jersey punk diehard, Chris Gethard. Tickets on sale now.
    Featured in This Episode:
"Flavor Ice" - feat. Heath Saraceno (originally by Bigwig)
"Punk Rock Academy" - feat. Mikey Erg! (Originally by Atom & His Package)
"The Kids Still Have a Lot to Say" - feat. Alf Bartone, Ed Brown, Dan Cav, Kevin Lynch, Mike Wolff (Originally by Vision)
"Just Like Kurt" - feat. Chris Gethard and Joe Pulito (Originally by Weston)
"Pink (New Jersey's Alright)" - Jon Tummillo, Agim Colaku, Joe Pulito, Patrick Tummillo (Originally by Mohawk Barbie)
Pre-order C1 on Sinking Ship Records
Grab tickets for the C1 release show

    Warm Blanket with Worriers

    Warm Blanket with Worriers

Lauren Denitzio of Worriers is back on Left of the Dial, and we're so excited to talk with them about their incredible new album, Warm Blanket, which is out April 7th–that’s today if you're listening when this episode drops–on Ernest Jenning Record Co. It’s Worriers' fourth full-length album, but it’s their first release as a solo act and really demonstrates the breadth and depth of Lauren's talent as a songwriter, musician, and now, producer. Kitzy and Andrea loved getting to talk with Lauren about writing, playing, and producing just about every element on the album, how their influences do and don't show up in their music, the importance of well-placed reverb, and a whole lot more.
Pick up Warm Blanket today, and if you're in any of the below cities, catch Worriers live this weekend. (They're one of our favorite live bands, so don't miss 'em if you've got the chance.)
APR 7 FRI Providence, RI. Fete Music Hall. 8PM.
APR 8 SAT Malden, MA. Faces Brewing Co. 8PM.
APR 9 SUN Ridgewood, NY. TV Eye. 8PM.

    The Music of Yellowjackets

    The Music of Yellowjackets

Andrea recently launched a new podcast called The Watchers where she and her cohost Jodie Mim watch Jersey-focused movies and TV. They're kicking off their first season with the Showtime series Yellowjackets.
If you haven’t watched Yellowjackets, it’s about what happened to a (fictional) New Jersey high school girls’ soccer team who spent 19 months in the Canadian wilderness when their plane crashed there in 1996. The show follows the girls in 1996 and 2021. It's a total celebration of 90s nostalgia, in general, and 90s Jersey nostalgia, in particular. You can watch the series premiere for free. But really, all you need to know about that show to enjoy this episode is that it has the most incredible soundtrack full of some of the best music to come out of the 90s.
Aside from talking about a few specific songs the show has used, we keep it spoiler free, so you don't need to be a Yellowjackets fan to enjoy this one.
We also sneak in this incredible cover of "Because the Night" by Screaming Females and Garbage. It's not in the show, but you know. Jersey.
If you're a Yellowjackets fan and decide to give The Watchers a listen, let Jodie and Andrea know what you think. And definitely give them a follow over on Twitter and Instagram.
New episodes every Tuesday wherever you listen to your podcasts. Like, subscribe, rate, review, etc., etc. linktr.ee/watcherspodnj

Awesome Sauce!

I love NPR’s All Songs Considered and this podcast has a very similar vibe and design. The pacing is just right and it feels super organic with its conversational persona. Great job, Kitzy and Caleb!
