We are Helen Drury and Maggie Devine Inman. We’re both wives of former professional footballers and together we have created an online community for the wives and partners of current and former professional footballers. The reason we created our very own podcast was to give a voice to this community. So often we hear the football story from a player’s perspective, but on our podcast, we hear from the partner - a player’s closest support system. Our lovely guests give us a peek behind the curtain - sharing their stories and giving an insight into their life in football - tackling a range of subjects from mental health, supporting their partner, to breaking down stereotypes.

Footballers & Partners who help make it happen
This was an intimate look at a footballer’s life during and after a professional football career and the partners who help make that happen. Maggie and Helen allowed Jake to have a safe space to talk about the challenges that players and their partners/families deal with, especially when the footballers’ professional careers end - sometimes abruptly through injury. Footballers are not invincible, they are flawed human beings like the rest of us, except they live under a heightened level of scrutiny. Any mistake they make is magnified and at times difficult to overcome as their mistakes are examined under varying levels of judgment from the public, or perhaps, never able to overcome for the countless trolls out there. The emotional, mental, and professional barriers that footballers endure can easily be dismissed by many because of the old assumption that they get paid a lot of money and therefore they cannot complain. However, this is not about struggle olympics, it’s about acknowledging that footballers and their partners are flawed human beings with insecurities and face challenges that we might not ever need to deal with. While we have that understanding we can also recognize that footballers and their partners have privileges and platforms; now, it’s just a matter of what they choose to do with their platforms. That’s why it’s important to celebrate footballers and their partners who are making a difference: Jake highlights societal issues and empowers others to have a voice by participating in this podcast, Maggie and Helen hold a discussion with Jake that touches on topics that football is grappling with including mental health, homophobia, and racism. What gets many of these footballers through these obstacles are the people they have in their lives. Woven throughout this podcast was the importance of friends, family, and having partners who form the bedrock that these footballers lean on. This podcast was honest and held my interest to the very end. Thank you! ~ TL
