Ian Wright: Grass Roots to FA Cup Glory

Welcome to the fifth episode of Lifting The Lid, on the Official Emirates FA Cup podcast. The show, hosted by Tubes and Steve Sidwell, that explores the unique experience of taking part in the world’s oldest and best club competition.
It’s a big one today, one of the true greats of the game, and one of the nicest gents around to boot. A born goalscorer, an FA Cup winner, and a genuine hero for so many players and fans alike. It’s Ian Wright Wright Wright!
Wrighty’s had an amazing career, coming to the game later than most but coming in like a freight train to be voted player of the century for Crystal Palace by the fans, and then going on to become Arsenal’s highest ever goalscorer (since surpassed by none other than Thierry Henry). This episode, called Grass Roots to FA Cup Glory and charts the path Wrighty took from being rejected by Brighton and Southend in his teens, via a short spell in prison, to lifting the FA Cup and League Cup in the same season with Arsenal.

    Jermaine’s Pennant: Reputation

    Jermaine’s Pennant: Reputation

Welcome to Lifting The Lid, here on the Official Emirates FA Cup podcast, and our fourth episode of the season. The show, hosted by Tubes and Steve Sidwell, that explores the unique experience of taking part in the world’s oldest and best club competition.
After having the pleasure of Jermaine Beckford’s company in our first episode, now we’ve got our second Jermaine, Jermaine ‘Penninho’ Pennant.
Jermaine has played for 15 different clubs across his career, from Arsenal to Billericay Town, with Liverpool, Stoke and Real Zaragoza in between. He was a brilliant player, making his Arsenal debut at 16, and going on to appear in the FA Cup final, a Europa League for Stoke, as well as the Champions League with Liverpool.
Today’s episode explores reputation, and Penninho had one as a bit of a bad boy which was fascinating to get into with him. We hear more about where he grew up in Nottingham and what was going on around him throughout his career.

    Peter Crouch: Pressure

    Peter Crouch: Pressure

Welcome to the third edition of Lifting The Lid, here on the Official Emirates FA Cup podcast.
The show, hosted by Tubes and Steve Sidwell, that explores the unique experience of taking part in the world’s oldest and best club competition. It’s a huge episode this week, a real giant of the game, in more ways than one. It’s the big man. We’ve got Peter Crouch! Crouchy is a hilarious and delightful man, as well a true legend of the game. He’s played for England, in a Champions League final, and has an FA Cup winners medal to his name to boot.
In this episode we discuss pressure, and Crouchy knows a thing or two about pressure having played in some of the biggest derbies around - Merseyside, South Coast, North London, Second City - and that’s without even mentioning Liverpool v Man U. But also the pressure of being the big man, and not looking like any other footballers out there. Jonathan Walters: Mental Health

    Jonathan Walters: Mental Health

Welcome to the second episode of Lifting The Lid, here on the Official Emirates FA Cup podcast. The show, hosted by Tubes and Steve Sidwell explores the unique experience of taking part in the world’s oldest and best club competition.
For this show we got to speak to Blackburn, Ipswich and, most notably, Stoke legend Jonathan Walters about his life in Football, and perhaps the lesser known challenges he was dealing with off the field throughout his career and the big steps football needs to take to address mental health in the game.
In an honest and inspiring conversation, Jonathan opens up about his own challenges, like losing his mother when he was still young, his daughter being born with gastroschisis, and his brother passing away young, and how he managed these pressures, and some of the interesting and, perhaps, unexpected places where he found help. We also talked about reaching the FA Cup Final with Stoke and what that meant for him and his career.

Bobby Zamora & Jermaine Beckford: Cult Heroes

Bobby Zamora & Jermaine Beckford: Cult Heroes

Welcome to the first episode of Lifting The Lid, here on the Official Emirates FA Cup podcast.
Over the next six weeks we’ll be bringing you in-depth conversations between our two hosts, Tubes and former Fulham, Chelsea and Reading player Steve Sidwell and some of the greats of the game about their lives in football and, in particular, their experiences playing in, watching, and in some cases, winning the FA Cup, the world’s oldest and best club competition.
In our first episode we kick off with a double dose, by speaking to not one, but two legends of the game. We’ve got FA Cup finalist and former West Ham, Fulham, Brighton and England player Bobby Zamora; and we also have Leeds, Everton and Preston’s Jermaine Beckford… the joint seventh highest FA Cup scorer of all time!
This episode explores the cup's ‘cult heroes’. It's a role that’s difficult to define but could equally be to do with a player’s personality and character around a club - like maybe Troy Deeney at Watford - or a particular moment in the club’s history. Both Bobby and Jermaine are certified cult heroes for at least one of their clubs, but it’s fantastic to hear what that means to them as footballers, and how they relate to the idea.
