I’m a professor of sociolinguistics. But I haven’t always been a professor. I’ve hitchhiked all over the country; I’ve been homeless; I've run with gangs; I've been broke down a few times; and I've even spent a few nights in jail.

This podcast is a way for me to engage in conversations with the people who impact me most. They include family members, friends, homies, and scholars. The conversations will cover every topic from the streets to the Ivory tower, gang signs to sign language, the n-word to the most cutting edge linguistic research.

The language of gangs: gang colors and gang signs

In this inaugural episode, I talk to my brother, Maurice, aka Reese-Loc, who was once an active member of 24 Karat Gold Gangster Crips from SE Oklahoma City. We talk at length about the nonverbal language of gang signs and gang colors. We also go into depth about some of the terminology used by gang members that outsiders scarcely have heard about.  As he will tell you, it's way deeper than just wearing blue or red.

I might be a professor now; but those who know me, know that  I haven't always been a professor. I've bent a lot of corners and seen a lot of things.
This podcast is a way for me to connect with the many places and people I’ve encountered along life's journey. I'll have in depth conversations with scholars, former gang members, and even farmers. We'll talk about everything from from Yale to jail, and we'll go from the streets to the Ivory Tower. My choice of guests and topics reflect the many experiences that I embody.
