"Married to a Journalist" hosts Elvie and Dave chat about the latest news and the state of the media industry, punctuated with quips about life, parenting, history, politics and other topics that fascinate us.

Warning: kid cameos possible!

Fake Terry Gross interviews Dave about his cute new children's book

Fake Terry Gross interviews Dave about his cute new children's book

As promised last week, we chat about Dave's newly published children's book Frank the Martian. Elvie is no Terry Gross, but she tried her best as an interviewer. The book is a cute little read that teaches children to accept and be kind to those who look different from them. The illustrations are stunning, and our toddler loves it. Dave chats about how the story came to be (there might have been some mild coercion), the best and the hardest moments getting the book from start to finish. If you're looking for a good bedtime book or a holiday present, you can check it out on Amazon via this link.

    Dispatch from Lisbon

    Dispatch from Lisbon

It's been a busy couple of weeks; back-to-back COVID booster shots, Thanksgiving travel, David publishing his book, and our first real vacation in two years. It's made it hard to find time to podcast but we decided to squeeze in one episode while we're on our trip to Lisbon before we return home to kids crawling all over us. We didn't carry our podcasting equipment, so please bear with the sound quality and the revelers at the restaurant outside our hotel.

Should journalists give up their right to vote?

Should journalists give up their right to vote?

One recent tweet from a reporter celebrating her vote in a local-level election briefly reignited an age-old debate: Should journalists vote in political elections? Dave and Elvi weigh in on the delicate dance between civic participation and journalism ethics. We chat about voting, attention protests, donating to social justice causes and the gray lines in between. Listen, share and let us know what you think.

Being a Black woman in journalism

Being a Black woman in journalism

Ever wonder what it would feel like to walk into a room full of people —maybe your workplace, a conference or press event — and no one looks like you? We're both journalists, but we're of different races. That means our professional experiences vary widely because of the shades of our skin. In this episode, Elvi and Dave chat about what it's like for her to be often the only Black woman or one of a few Black people in a newsroom or almost every journalism setting. It's a thoughtful, insightful conversation that gives listeners a glimpse into how racial dynamics in an overwhelmingly white industry, shape the experiences of Black female journalists.

    Newsroom Food

    Newsroom Food

There's one slice of homemade banana bread left in the newsroom breakroom. Do you take it? Or is it a trap? Dave and Elvie chat about the one thing that unites journalists; those baked goods or candy that colleagues bring in.
We talk about our favorite and least favorite newsroom food. Elvie won't drink your homemade kombucha. Dave feels cheated when you bring little baggies of herbs from your home garden.
What's your favorite work breakroom food is? Have you've ever become sick from eating something a colleague brought in?
