Great Noir cast
Fun podcast breaking down the depths of Noir.
Off To A Good Start
Very pleased to find this podcast and to discover the premiere episode covers my favorite movie, The Big Sleep. As much as I would like to quibble with some of the drawbacks the hosts point out with the film, I really can't. They're all fair. I also like that the hosts have obviously read and reference the source novel which a lot of people don't and I think the comparisons they make between the book's strengths and weaknesses and the film's and where the two diverge are pretty spot on.
I am not sure that they have the all details quite right in terms of the context in which various production decisions were made, and I think some of their observations are filtered a little heavily through modern sensibilities in terms of how the comedic and romantic banter (or parlor sing-alongs...!) play today vs. in the 40's, but then again none of us were there so who knows? I appreciate that there are younger people looking this far back and enjoying movies that most people aren't able to relate to anymore.
I would say the only real question that I would like to have seen addressed is "is The Big Sleep actually noir?" Perhaps in the '45 cut? I think the concessions made to Hollywood tropes and trying to make this a follow-on star-making vehicle for Lauren Bacall pretty clearly taken it out of the noir camp and into more of a hard boiled romance? I love it for that. I just think the argument can be made that it lacks the pathos and perhaps some of the cinematographic style of noir...
