10@9 No One Called You - June 7, 2024
Today's date on the Jewish calendar, first day of Sivan, is momentous as it mentioned explicitly in the Torah that the Jewish People reached and camped around Mt Sinai, in anticipation of God's Revelation whose celebrated anniversary is the upcoming Holiday of Shavuot. Today is the anniversary of the date on which the Jewish People reached a level of unity and cohesiveness never achieved before or since. But we keep trying. This morning I share a brilliant story by Rabbi Meilech Biderman, which teaches us a powerful tool we can use to work toward that goal.
Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. We take great pleasure in welcoming everyone with a warm smile, while sharing inspiration through prayer, study, and friendship.

BaMidbor and Shavuot - June 6, 2024
This evening we discuss the discrepancy over the name of the Prince of the the Tribe of Gad - sometimes Eliyasaf ben De'u'el and sometimes Eliyasaf ben Re'u'el - exploring an insight of the Chidah, Rabbi Chaim Azulai. And we demonstrate this with a remarkable story about Rabbi Chizkiya Medini, author of Sdei Chemed, the first comprehensive encyclopedia of Talmudic Law. I share my recipe for Eggplant Parmesan, which I humbly claim is the best I ever tasted, and I share the story behind it. Email me for the recipe (rabbi@adath.ca), and let me know what you think. You could enjoy this for Shavuot, and we explain one reason for the custom of eating dairy foods on this Holiday. Finally, we analyze the mystical side of the Rav, Rabbi Yosef Soloveitchik, which he found in normative religious practice. We consider one example, the reading of the Torah in synagogue, an occasion of God's immanence.

10@9 How Marriage Begins, Part 2 - June 6, 2024
This morning we discuss Part 2 of a two-part series on the mechanism in Jewish law that creates a marriage (see Part 1 here on June 4, 2024). This is a subject widely misunderstood, and has its source in the Talmud and Bereishit (Genesis), and its proof in the Book of Ruth. This morning in Part 2, we examine why this misunderstanding is so prevalent, and how this is a central theme of the Book of Ruth and Shavuot, when it is read in the synagogue.

10@9 Perspectives on Jerusalem - June 5, 2024
This morning we discuss three perspectives on this day, Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Unification Day, which could not be more different from each, and all of which express, to my mind, the multi-layered significance of Jerusalem today: (then) Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, Sarah Tuttle-Singer, and (then) IDF Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren. Chag Someach!

10@9 When is Shavuot? - June 3, 2024
This morning we discuss the surprising question of when is Shavuot, because nowhere does the Torah tell us, and the Talmud has a dispute about this - and the answer is may surprise you. We analyze an explanation of Rabbi Yehuda Amital
