This is a story of home, history, celebration, and reclamation. Clear Comfort, now known as the Alice Austen House Museum, sits on the north bank of Staten Island with a sweeping view of the Manhattan skyline. Victorian photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952) lived here her whole life, until she was evicted in 1945. Decades later, boxes of letters that had been found in a closet were returned to the house that had been restored to its 1890's appearance, when the letters first arrived. The letter collection serves as a portal to photographic, women's, and LGBTQ history. Alice Austen and her life partner Gertrude Tate were together for more than 50 years.

A glimpse of another time
This is such an interesting look at a very different time. These people had a great deal of leisure time, “Mama” was most interested in her daughter Alice’s clothing and social life, no other concerns seemed pressing. In our day and age, we are bombarded with so much information, pleasant and not, from all over the world, that it is refreshing and somehow to sink back into a slower life, which these podcasts allow one to do. I like getting to know Alice through the eyes/words of the others who shared their lives with her. Very cool, I’m looking forward to the next one!
Fantastic!
What a wonderful way to get a glimpse of the life of these women during the Victorian period and specially a woman photographer. The different character letters and the music was like a wonderful dance with words!
