1178: The Year the Moon Split in Two or Christian Propaganda? (Episode #39)

1178: The Year the Moon Split in Two or Christian Propaganda? (Episode #39)

According to a chronicler at Christ Church Cathedral Priory in Canterbury named Gervase, on the evening of June 18, 1178, five monks from the monastery witnessed a strange lunar event. The monks reported seeing the Moon split as if "a flaming torch sprang up, spewing out fire, hot coals, and sparks." This phenomenon was said to persist, with the Moon's appearance fluctuating as if it were wounding itself. The monks described the Moon as having a black line forming across it, which subsequently divided, giving the impression that the Moon had split into two distinct parts. The event was noted to have lasted for a considerable duration before the Moon returned to its normal appearance. Was it a meteor, a comet, a volcano, or rather just the monk associating strange celestial apparitions to Christian victories in the Crusades?

Biggest Art Heist in History? $500 million in 81 Minutes (Episode #38)

Biggest Art Heist in History? $500 million in 81 Minutes (Episode #38)

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist, valued at $500 million, is one of the most notorious art thefts in history. It occurred in the early hours of March 18, 1990, when two men dressed as Boston police officers gained entry to the museum and spent 81 minutes stealing 13 pieces of art. The stolen works included both high-profile pieces and lesser-known ones. Some theories suggest it was partly an inside job by a disgruntled worker, while others believe it was orchestrated by Boston mobsters, or possibly just perpetuated by a wealthy art collector. None of the stolen pieces have been recovered, and the case remains unsolved.

The Most Well-Documented UFO Case in History? The Rendlesham Forest Incident (Episode #37)

The Most Well-Documented UFO Case in History? The Rendlesham Forest Incident (Episode #37)

On December 26, 1980, around 3am a USAF security patrol near the east gate of the RAF Woodbridge base observed strange lights descending into Rendlesham Forest located in Suffolk England. Initially, they thought it might be a downed aircraft, prompting them to investigate further. When the servicemen entered the forest they encountered a glowing object that was metallic in appearance and had colored lights. As they approached, the object seemed to move through the trees and animals on a nearby farm reportedly went into a frenzy during this time. The UK Ministry of Defence initially dismissed the incident as having no national security implications. So what did the USAF soldiers see in #RendleshamForest that night?

Was She A Cold War Spy? The Case of the Isdal Woman (Episode #36)

Was She A Cold War Spy? The Case of the Isdal Woman (Episode #36)

On November 29, 1970, a father and his two daughters were hiking in Norway’s Isdalen Valley when they came upon a grim discovery: the body of a deceased woman. Unable to identify her, authorities dubbed her the "Isdal Woman". Found near her were various items, including jewelry, a watch, bottles with labels scraped off, and clothes with removed labels. Subsequent investigation uncovered suitcases containing similarly unlabeled items, along with a coded piece of paper. Though the autopsy revealed she had ingested 50-70 sleeping pills, leading to a ruling of suicide, suspicions of murder persisted among some police and the public. The woman's extensive travels, use of fake aliases, and purported eyewitness accounts fueled speculation that she may have been a Cold War spy. The mystery of her identity and demise remains unsolved.

Banished by the Devil? The Will-O'-the-Wisps (Episode #35)

Banished by the Devil? The Will-O'-the-Wisps (Episode #35)

Seen across the world and told in various folktales, the Will-O'-the-Wisp is said to resemble a flickering lamp or lantern, often leading travelers astray from a safe path. In some cultures, the will-o'-the-wisps are often associated with ghosts, fairies, or elemental spirits. In modern times, the will-o-the-wisp has been seen as extraterrestrial rather than mystical. The will-o-the-wisp is also more commonly associated with a story about Stingy Jack who tricked the devil. In turn he was forced to wander the earth with a single ember that he carries in a hollow gourd, many now call this as a jack-o-lantern. So what or who are the will-o-the-wisps?

Escaped Alcatraz or Died Trying? (Episode #34)

Escaped Alcatraz or Died Trying? (Episode #34)

Alcatraz Prison, deemed inescapable during its 29-year stint as an American federal prison, was situated on an isolated island surrounded by cold, rough waters. Despite 13 other escape attempts by  dozens of other inmates (including 2 who tried twice), Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin may have successfully escaped on June 11, 1962, evading capture through meticulous planning, deception, and ingenuity. Their fate, whether they survived and lived as free men, remains a #mystery.
