    Kansas Expectations

    Kansas Expectations

In this episode, Dan Johnson interviews Brett Konen about hunting in Kansas. They discuss the expectations for hunting in Kansas, the impact of the recent public land cell camera ban, the increasing cost of hunting land, and the best time to hunt in Kansas. They also talk about terrain features, access to private and public land, and the effectiveness of calling and rattling during the rut.
    Takeaways:

Kansas offers the opportunity to hunt four to five-year-old bucks, with the potential for 140-150 class deer.

The hunting community in Kansas has been affected by the recent public land cell camera ban, especially for out-of-state hunters.

The cost of hunting land in Kansas is increasing, making it more challenging for the average hunter to afford.

The best time to hunt in Kansas is the last week of October and the first week of November, with the peak of the rut around November 15th.

Terrain features to look for include pinch points between grass and agriculture, areas with water sources, and overlooked spots with cover.

Access to private land in Kansas is limited, and getting permission can be challenging.

Driving the roads to scout and finding areas away from population centers can help avoid hunting pressure on public land.

The best time for calling and rattling in Kansas is from the 23rd of October to early December.

South Kansas offers more hunting opportunities and higher deer density compared to North Kansas.

Hunting in Kansas can be a fun and exciting experience, especially for those who have not hunted there before.

Death Metal, Youth Softball, and E-Scouting

On his episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is once again joined by the one and only Tony Peterson to discuss their crazy lives, and e-scouting. Not sure why Tony keeps coming back as a guest but he keeps "YES". This is great, because Dan can't find anyone else to hop on the show. The guys talks about Tonys mental state and how it is affected by the hate-filled death metal he listens to, how horrible of a softball coach he is, and what it's like being managed by someone who is younger and less experienced than him. Dan expresses his opinion on Mark Kenyon's facial hair, practicing baseball with his son, and how many dead bodies they each have seen.
Then, for the last 20 mins of the show the guys take a deep dive in to how they approach e-scouting public public for out-of-state hunts. Anytime Tony hops on the show, it is full of randomness, exciting topics, and complete nonsense . Enjoy and Share!!

    Picking Spots Using E-Scouting

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down what he looks for in hunting spots while e-scouting public land. Recently, Dan found out that he finally drew a Kansas archery tag. He has never hunted Kansas, so he is starting from scratch when it comes to finding places to hunt. Because this is an out of state hunt, Dan is going to rely heavily on using digital maps to e-scout the public properties before he hunts them. You will hear what specific terrain features he is looking for, how may points of access he would like those properties to have, and one of the biggest contributing factors... food sources.

The last podcast

When referring to the question about the 1,000 acre property and surveilling the deer and feeding them all year long. To me it sounds more like farming the deer and than selectively harvesting the animal you want just like they would do on a cattle farm.
