The No Bad Ideas Podcast is the creation of Gabriel Urbina, Sarah Shachat, and Zach Valenti, three writer and artist-types who, in order to stay fresh creatively, have an excuse to hang out with each other once a week, and check in on what they're working on, take a terrible idea they found on the Internet each week and turn it into a compelling narrative. Or as close as they can get in 30 minutes.

If you're someone trying to be creative yourself or even if you just appreciate a good story, you'll enjoy listening to Zach, Sarah, and Gabriel figure out how to make sense of the best (or worst?) absurdities the internet has to offer. We guarantee there have definitely been worse ideas.

Episode 113: Land Sharks (With Adrián Burke)

Episode 113: Land Sharks (With Adrián Burke)

We’re delighted to be joined this week by the host of the La Mezcla podcast and comedian extraordinaire, the Right Honorable Adrián Burke!

We rely on Adrián’s wisdom first to resolve an AITA quandary on Reddit, and turn it into holiday spectacular of petty family grudges, twin swapping, and inadvertent romance. Then, we return to our old friend, the Shark Story, and put a twist on this one wherein a brave documentarian tries to bring down Big Shark Fin, in an action-thriller with big franchise potential. Call us, Nabisco.

Plus: a psychological heist, swan dives into the dumpster, terrible Doctor Evil shit, elk antlers for days, and the real animal that is inside of you, or whatever.

Episode 111: Florida Man Delivers (With Marissa Tandon)

Episode 111: Florida Man Delivers (With Marissa Tandon)

We’re overjoyed this week to be joined by the phenomenal writer, producer, and renowned podcast creator, Marissa Tandon!

We start with a first: Zach brings us an entirely sensible idea we all agree with. It just also happens to include Guy Fieri. We ruin it with a tale of corporate intrigue and compromised morals and also romantic comedy. Then, Gabriel brings us one of our very favorite adventures of Florida Man yet. We try to find the fun in both the idea and  machetes, and honestly we’re better at one than the other.

Plus: Boaty McTownFace, inevitable loopholes, big Deadpool potential, corporate coming in and [insert horrible name here].

Episode 110: That Sinking Feeling (With David K. Barnes)

Episode 110: That Sinking Feeling (With David K. Barnes)

The mastermind behind Wooden Overcoats, David K. Barnes, joins the bad ideas squad once again - first to bring a bad idea of his own to the table and then to discuss our creative processes!

First, David brings us a story about a house whose inexplicable popularity goes hand-in-hand with its rather strange flaw. The team must decide what kind of con story they're going to build around this very suspect construct. After that, we get to have a chat with David about his writing process, his thoughts on effective storytelling, and his insights on how to make comedy work in audio.

All of that, plus: a bizarre twist, a family's ability to love or connect with each other, several films playing at once in the same screen, reams of painstaking detail, and the shifting of tectonic plates!

    Episode 109: Crime+ (With David K. Barnes)

    Episode 109: Crime+ (With David K. Barnes)

Oh, what a day! We’re joined this week by one of our absolute favorites (but we’ll never tell you favorite what), the head writer of Wooden Overcoats, David K. Barnes!

We completely squander David’s talents, first, in turning the tale of one of the most incompetent thieves we’ve ever seen into one of the strangest heist plans we’ve ever concocted. Then we start a war… kind of, and turn a European military mishap into a game of spin doctors that, of course, spins wildly out of control.

Plus: The Lost Boys gritty reboot, clumsy escape attempts, Hitchcockian suspense, Czech Jean Dujardin, and the strangest variation on the prisoner’s dilemma we’ve ever heard.

Always a delight

I love getting to start my week with No Bad Ideas. The hosts are fantastic, the guests are amazing, and the ideas are always truly, astonishingly bad.

Thank you for 100 wonderful episodes, looking forward to many more <3

Nothing I love more than a podcast with a totally random concept

There are many types of podcasts. They tell you about a topic. Rewatch podcasts. Audio fiction. And then there’s my favorite type, the “hey lets do this thing and also tape it.” No bad ideas is a beautiful example.

I was destined to leave this review today because this podcast is a 10/10

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started listening, but as I heard them spin that first episode’s bad idea into a developed story (that I wouldn’t be against paying to see/hear a production of), it only deepened my appreciation for Zach, Sarah, and Gabriel. Not only does this podcast fulfill my curiosity to peek into their minds as a Wolf 359 fan, but it leaves me laughing and also thoughtful about writing stories, and writing/creating in general. I support you guys so much, thank you for sharing this podcast (and all the other things you create) with us!
