    Ep 40: Not A Robot's War on Film - Rambo III, 1988

    Ep 40: Not A Robot's War on Film - Rambo III, 1988

Our episodes on the topic of the the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan between the years 1979-1989 were recorded roughly six weeks before the February 24th Russian invasion of Ukraine. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine.

Furthermore, our hearts go out to the citizens of Russia who actively oppose this invasion and have been arrested and fined for their protests. We are with you all in spirit humans and pray for a swift end to the heartbreak, devastation, and confusion inevitably created by war. We stand with Ukraine and call out for peace.

The 1988 movie Rambo III was a fun movie for our team to poke some fun at considering the many issues with the movie. It was a typical 80's action movie loaded with confusing masculine tropes and a subtle commentary on what it means to be a soldier. Rambo didn't have many speaking parts in this film, but he was definitely an expert at blowing things up. Join us as we head back into the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan that took place between 1979 - 1989.

    Ep 37: Not A Robot's War on Film - Tora! Tora! Tora! , 1970

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." - Hanlon's Razor

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 movie about the Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor, and the series of American blunders that aggravated its effectiveness. Tora! Tora! Tora! has been possibly the most accurate portrayal of the attack at Pearl Harbor that our War on Film crew has viewed so far. By presenting both an American perspective and a Japanese one there is much to discuss. Join us for Not a Robot's War on Film!

Today we honor Navy Ensign Herbert C. Jones who was on board the US California during the Pearl Harbor attack. Herbert was helping load manual ammunition when an explosion severely injured him and trapped his fellow shipmates. Orders were then given to abandon ship. Unable to flee he demanded they leave him there while they saved themselves. In March 1942, Jones posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his bravery and sacrifice.

    Ep 36: Not A Robot's War on Film - Air Force, 1943

    Ep 36: Not A Robot's War on Film - Air Force, 1943

The Not a Robot War on Film Podcast continues their discussions on movies depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor with the problematic 1943 movie Air Force. The film which was shot while WWII was still going on was mostly a propaganda film littered with racism and false claims. Unfortunately, the nostalgia of the silver screen isn't enough to make it passable for today's audiences, but there are still lessons that can be learned. No need to watch it yourself though, grab some popcorn and listen here.

Today we honor Ben Kuroki, a Japanese American citizen who was the only person of Asian decent to serve in the air force during WWII. Ben served his country at a time when the rest of his fellow Japanese Americans were being sent to internment camps out of (irrational) fear these everyday citizens would betray the United States. Mr. Kuroki faced several obstacles in his path to flight that all centered around vile racism, which movies like Air Force encouraged. Nevertheless Ben became a decorated and respected airman after flying and fighting over Europe, Africa, and Japan. After surviving the war Ben Kuroki went on to become a journalist, earning a degree from Nebraska State where his bequest in journalism lives on today. In 2007 PBS released a spectacular documentary about Ben Kuroki's life called Most Honorable Son.

Ben sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 98 leaving behind a great legacy. We salute you, and thank you for your service.

Ep 35: Not A Robot's War on Film - From Here to Eternity, 1953

Ep 35: Not A Robot's War on Film - From Here to Eternity, 1953

In this episode we don Hawaiian shirts, sip coconut drinks, and review the 1953 movie from Here to Eternity.  This movie was widely recommended to audiences who didn't enjoy the 2001 movie Pearl Harbor and features an iconic beach scene. From Here to Eternity was based on a novel written by James Jones in 1951. This movie stars Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, and Montgomery Clift and was directed by Fred Zinneman.

Today we honor Ralph A. Gastelum, for his service in the US Marine Corps during the Korean war. He participated in the Inchon landing, fought in the battle of Seoul, and battled during the spring offensive of 1951.

We salute you and that you for your service.

A Great Podcast Concept for an Under Examined Genre of Films

War movies are ubiquitous in Hollywood but there are surprisingly few reviewers dedicated to the complex genre. This podcast is hosted by a US Army Veteran and with his quests takes a critical look at the subject of war as it is described in the film medium. The podcast is a mix of fiction and history, like the films they discus. It’s not all serious though, there’s a lot to poke fun in these films as well. A great listen. I would recommend the Saving Private Ryan, Warhorse, All Quiet on the Western Front, and 1917 episodes.

Great production value!

War movies can be a bit under appreciated, and this show tackles them in thematic stretches, giving you the breakdown on the performances and how movies based on similar events and time frames stack up to each other. It also has fantastic sound quality and music! Listen to this show if you dig this type of cinema!
